Does any body have some feedback on whether to stay in Fredriksted versus Christiansted - specifically feedback about staying at the Fredriksted Hotel?
From what I can tell after months of researching, Christiansted seems to have more to do in a confined area.
Hi Sandcrab,
Have you been to the Frederiksted Hotel? I heard that it's a 45 minute bus ride to Christiansted - is that about right?
Thanks !
Warren
Hi Warren,
I've only stopped in Fredricksted off a cruise back in 2000. It just seems that Christiansted offers more dining, shopping, activities, etc., especially now that cruise ships aren't stopping in Fredriksted.
We'll be staying on a little island in Christiansted Harbor. I'm sure Islander can give you a good comparison of the two cities.
When I stayed in Frederiksted it was at Cottages By the Sea. This was a delightful place to stay. The cottages are right on the best beach on St. Croix and the prices are lower than anywhere else. The management was very frendly and warm hospallity. When on St. Croix I would not consider anyplace else. I believe the email address is
[email protected] or see their web site: www.caribbeancottages.com
You will be glad you did. 5 stars all the way.

Actually they're not "cities", they're too small. Frederiksted and Christiansted are known as "towns"
Dominic,
Sorry, I didn't know the population cutoff number that determined whether it was a city or a town. I was raised in a "village" of 450 people so they both looked lite "cities" to me.
Be sure and check out the area. A lot of crime happens in Fredericksted.
Hello,
Staying in Frediksted or Christiansted or out of the main "towns" is a personal choice. Do you want to be on a beach, do you want to be in easy acess to shopping and restaurants ect... If you were to stay in Christiansted - for example at Protestant Cay which is where Sandcrab said he was staying - you would have a beach in front of the hotel and then town with shopping, bars, restaurants, historical sites a 1 minute ferry ride away. Frediksted is a sleepier town right now; you will find several nice beaches in close proximity, good dive shop, a few historical sites of interest... shopping and restaurant selection not as good as Christiansted. I unfortunately don't have any comments about the hotel, so you will have to keep looking for feedback to help with the accomodation decision.
Happy Planning!!

Warren,
My wife and I returned from St. Croix three weeks ago. We split our time between the Holgar Danske Best Western in Christiansted and The Frederiksted Hotel in Frederiksted. The Frederiksted Hotel is old but clean and what you would expect a small hotel to be. The room we stayed in had a small refrigerator, sink and microwave. The rooms have A/C and there is a relaxed atmosphere in the open air restaurant in the court yard. The hotel locks the entrance gate at 9:00pm, but your room key will open the gate. There is no specific parking, so you park on the street. Was not a real problem for us except for the very last night – someone thought that they really needed the hubcaps from our rental car more than we did. That ruined the last day we had on the island just to file the police report and paperwork at the rental car company. The cost is reasonable, comparatively speaking.
As far as which town to stay in… like the advice so far has stated, it depends on your likes. There are places to eat and go for entertainment in each. While in Christiansted the action seems to be more centered on the tourist, Frederiksted caters more to the locals and is much more laid back.
Hope this helps,
Kenneth
I just spent the weekend on STX at the best place imaginable. on the west end 5 minutes drive from the Sunset Grille. It is MT Victory Camp, a totally different experience than some plactic resort or motel. Bruce & Mathilde. the owners have a unique place to say the least. Check Mt Victory out,
