I've seen your posts, and I'll try to answer more than this one.

I was in Frederiksted last month for a turtle watching expedition with the St Croix Environmental Association. Since the expedition is on Sandy Point, I looked for accommodations in Frederiksted. Ended up staying at Sandcastle by the Beach which is next door to Castle by the Sea (CBS).

Dorsch Beach, right outside your door at Sandcastle by the Beach and CBS, is reputedly one of the best swimming beaches on St Croix. Along the shore you'll see LOTS of birds (pelicans, sandpipers, gulls), and egrets all over the place. The snorkeling is also reputedly good (I was too busy touring to beach, besides, I live in St Thomas).

It's a popular beach with locals, so early morning, several come by to wade and swim. I saw someone bringing their horse up out of the water. Unlike most of the tourist beaches in St Thomas, this beach has lots of eroding shells, so it's a more "natural" beach. I saw govt workers coming by to pick up litter, so it's not a trashy beach, but not tourist pristine, either. Again, more like a neighborhood beach.

CBS and Sandcastle are 1/2 mile from Frederiksted, and I walked back and forth at least twice a day. Since the restaurant at CBS/Sandcastle wasn't open on Tue/Wed (we arrived late Wed nite), we had to go into town to eat. We ate at Aqua West, which has a to-die-for view of the sea and is entirely open. Food was OK - kind of Louisiana creole focus. I ordered a salad with grilled tuna on top, and the salad greens were good, but tuna was bland. I can't remember what my friend had! The prices for dinner entrees were probably $15-$25.

Below Aqua West is a deli (something Turtle, I think) that supposedly has great sandwiches, but they don't open until, I think 8 a.m., and I don't usually like sandwiches at that hour.

There's another restaurant at the Frederiksted Hotel. We ate breakfast there, because it's the only place we could find with that served breakfast. I had an omelet, which was kind of small I thought, and didn't come with home fries just toast. The restaurant is by their pool, so it's a fairly nice atmosphere, but it's survival food - nothing to write home about.

The Blue Moon Cafe is just down the street, and it's supposedly excellent, but we didn't have time to eat there. Dinner starts at 6, and I like to eat earlier. I looked at the menu, and it look fairly trendy and varied with prices starting at maybe $16.

Also on the main street in Frederiksted is a local restaurant, Motown Cafe. We both had curried chicken with macaroni and cheese, and some other side dishes that I can't remember( including fried plantains), but the food was good, and you get a lot for your money. Our meal was around $8 without drink. Curry isn't spicy, spicy like in Indian restaurants. There's a coffee shop on the same street that has the best $1 brownie I think I've ever had.

The Sunset Grill, which is just outside downtown Frederiksted, is supposedly THE place, and has great sunset views. I didn't know about it then, but will try it when I go over next time.

Activities in Frederiksted - there's a dive shop that offers kayaking, snorkeling, dives, and other water-related activities. There's the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, but they're under renovation, so no exhibits at this time. We were able to buy old calendars with nice prints for $5. They'll probably be open by season. The fort is also under renovation, so you can't see everything, but it's very picturesque.

Not too far from The Sunset Grill is a horse stable, and they offer daily rides/tours. There are also some hiking tours (Ay-Ay Tours) that leave from Pratt Hall Plantation/Beach.

On the second Fri of every month, there's a free jazz concert on the pier. I think every Sun at the restaurant at CBS, there's jazz.

What else did you need to know? My brain and battery are dying out!

Just to clarify a point, CBS that is referred to by ms411 is Cottages by the Sea. Otherwise I'll second the report on F'sted

i have heard that Fredericksted is not a very nice place to kinda of walk and hang around due to poverty and drug use. Don't get me wrong I do not plan on hanging around in questionable locations at night. We just like to be able to walk/shop/eat/drink kinda people watch. Is it particularly more dangerous than most places

You can walk the beach area by Cottages by the Sea and Sandcastle at the Beach at night, because you're right in front of the properties, and people will probably be out at the outside bar, restaurant, etc.

I don't think there's much lighting on the road from Cottages to Frederiksted, so it would be very dark. I wouldn't advise walking at night. During the day, there are some guys who hang out at the outdoor "fish market," and one of them was kind of rude and aggressive, because I didn't want to buy his fish. But, I saw him more than once, and he didn't say anything more.

It's probably OK to walk the main street in Frederiksted (Strand?) at night going from one restaurant to another, because it's only a few blocks, and the pier area is well lit. But the side and back streets are VERY DARK, and there aren't families and couples walking around. Most of the people in the VI drive to their destinations, park, and then drive back home. Christensted is more walker friendly, even at night because of the boardwalk, etc.

Both Les San Tropez & The Sunset Grill are excellent.

Les San Tropez is in downtown.

Sunset Grill is oceanfront just west of town. It's a great beach restaurant with awesome sunset views.

One day last summer, we got up early and watched the sun rise at Point Udall (the eastern most point of USA) and the same night, we watched the sun set from Sunset Grill.
