I lived on St. Thomas in the early 90's...waited tables at The Chart House (which is gone, correct?) and hung out any place that sold an alcoholic drink. Seems like a lot has changed with the exception of the Green House...any recommends where a decent looking 38 year old fellow can hang out in the evenings? Staying at the Frenchman's Reef. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the places where people used to hang out are now closed for renovation, and we were just discussing today if the old crowds would return when the new places opened. The Shipwreck in Al Cohen's Mall across from Havensight is popular. There's now a Hooters in the same neighborhood, but I mostly see groups (male or mixed) going there. Wikked and Fat Turtle at Yacht Haven Grande. Wikked has a great happy hour with $2 tacos and 75 cents wings. Of course, discounted drinks. Shipwreck has a mandatory service charge, so pay attention to your bill. Paradise Gate in Havensight across from the Butterfly Farm used to be pretty good, but I haven't been there in a while.

Herve on Govt Hill has a Grey Goose Happy Hour Wed to Fri, and it's supposed to be the place for locals on Fri. I went on a Wed, and there weren't many people there then.

Of course, The Greenhouse is still going strong!

So I have to ask - When my son lived on the East End there appeared to me a Red Hook or CA crowd and the two did not mix.
Was that the case 20 years ago? Is it still that way?

TomB I call it the black hole of Red Hook. Once people move out there they fall in and never make it back to town. Town folk do go out there to party though.

I think you are right.
He only went to the "other" side except to replace phones when they broke, were lost at Duffys, or dropped in the ocean. Of course you had to pick up friends at the airport who were returning - If and only if they were carrying they delicacy that is missing from STT. That would be Arbys :@) :S

Speaking of Red Hook people, I am one at heart! At the tender age of 41, I like Island Time Pub in Yacht Haven Grande. Molly Malones is OK, so is the Caribbean Saloon. Across the street is Duffy's and across the harbor is Latitude 18 (great live music almost every night). For downtown, I like Captain Mayhem's (second floor, near the sky ride) and the Yacht Haven Grande bars. The only place I feel safe down here after 10 or 11pm though is Island Time or Molly's. Crowds at a lot of these other places tend to go straight down hill after then.

Lat 18 is one of my favorites and CaRiGaS across from Food Center in American Yacht Harbor.

Some of the best music I have heard was on open mic night. at L-18
You never know who is on island and the pros and amateurs get up just to have fun
Technically not the best music but some great jams and rememberable performances
