We are visiting STJ for the 2nd time in Dec. Does anyone know if fishing is allowed on the island (with or w/o permit). We would love to be able to catch our own fish for dinner one night. Thanks!!

This link should be helpful unless you're looking for info on charter fishing:

I do shore bottom fishing on St. John using primarily frozen squid for bait, a 15lb test, 1 or 2 oz sinker, 2/0 hook, on a hand line (also called Cuban yo-yo). I catch different types of grouper (mainly rock hind), yellow tail snapper, parrot fish, ol' wife (trigger fish), grunt. Just make sure you know what it is you are eating. Ciguatera is something to look out for. You do NOT want to get that!! To be on the safe side, a few fish to not eat would be barracuda, dog tooth snapper, and most varieties of trigger fish. Some people eat them, but I'd say just be safe instead of sorry and avoid them. Have a great time! I love to fish, haven't gotten to do it in awhile.

🙂 Some people will tell you not to eat any fish you catch off the reef because of ciguatera....but I assure you, you can eat many of the fish you catch here. 🙂 Have fun!
