Is catch-and-release fishing legal from shore or piers in St Thomas, and do we need a VI fishing licesnse to do so? If a license is needed where do we buy one?

Just my opinion but why not "fish" for photos or just for your viewing pleasure by snorkeling the beautiful beaches of the Virgin Islands? Catch and release serves no purpose but to injure the fish and they are sooo pretty to swim with. I can understand the need to catch fish for food but to harm them and then throw them back....I wonder why?

There are no really piers on STT to fish from. I suppose you could fish off the pier in Charlotte but I have never seen anyone do it. I have seen some people fish from the Latitude 18 pier. But that is it. And the fising off shore is pretty bad given all of the bait fish that are there.

Give it up and enjoy the water life as it is.

I love shore fishing in the USVI but do it mainly from the shores of Water Island, so I can't answer your questions directly. I can tell you than on my last trip I caught yellowtail snapper and pompano from the shore. In the past I've hooked tarpon, ladyfish and barracuda. If you're like me you just love to fish. I would say find a quiet place at sunset or early morning, maybe at the end of whatever beach you're near, and give it a fling. I use only artificials; last time had luck with a broken-back minnow and the soft body imitations that have a tail that twirls. But check with DPNR or somebody and see if there are any regulations in place. The only real tackle shop on the island is at Red Hook; they could answer your questions I'm sure.

Halfman, thanks for the feedback. I will give it a try with some light spinning tackle, but I'll probably use bits of shrimp on bare hooks so I can keep the luggage space and weight to a minimum. We are already bringing two sets of scuba gear and that pushes the new baggage limits to the max. I'm sure I can find some rocky shorelline at Dorothea Bay and try my luck. 😉
