I am new to this board and enjoy the many informative posts. My husband and I will be spending three weeks in the USVI this summer--first week at Sapphire Beach Resort (STT), second at Hillcrest Guest House (STJ), and third at Coconut Coast Villas (STJ). I have three questions:

1. My husband would like to go deep-sea fishing for BIG game fish. Is that possible in the waters of the USVI?

2. We have heard from a former St. John resident that one cannot eat fish caught near the shore on St. John due to a toxin in the area.

3. The same friend said that water for drinking, bathing, etc., is in short supply on St. John.

Can you shed any light on these topics? Also, will we need to drink bottled water while we are on island?

We are VERY excited about visiting these beautiful islands. Thank you for your help...

1.There are many IGFA records made in the waters off of the USVI's.
Yes, there is great fishing offshore and inshore. Charters run anywhere from $300 for a half day inshore to $1200+ full day offshore. Have your husband bring a pack rod and he can shore fish for tarpon, bonefish, etc.
2. I haven't heard that and I don't think its true. there are some fish you wouldn't want to eat for this reason like bigger baracudas but they aren't good eating anyway.
3.All fresh water is collected from the rain so yes I think there is always a short supply of fresh water but, its nothing to worry about.
The tap water taste a little different but its safe to drink.
3 weeks in the usvi!!! i'm jealous

Re: #2 There is a sickness that can be gotten from eating reef fish, or fish that eat reef fish, called cigaterra (sp?). The fish he will catch while deep sea fishing (tuna, wahoo, dolphin, etc.) are great to eat. The captain will tell you which ones you don't want to eat (marlin, shark, etc.).

To de safe, don't eat anything you catch fishing from shore. Catch and release is the way to go anyway.
