Want to take my fly rod to St Thomas to do some shoreline fishing for bonefish (or anything that will bite). Any places that anyone is aware of? If any one has seen several flyfishermen fishing in one place(s), that should mean that there having some luck. Also, does anyone know if one needs a fishing license?

Many thanks,
Al

Your best bet for bonefish on St Thomas is probably in the lagoon on the east side. The main grass flats are at the false entrance, which is pretty obvious when you are out in the lagoon. This is the only place on St. Thomas that requires a license (i'm almost positive about this). They are sold upstairs at the airport and are two dollars per month. They can give you a map of the area as well and show you where the false entrance is. I'm not sure if you can get there from land (it's connected, but I don't know how to get out there on foot), so you may want to look into renting a kayak. I'm pretty sure West Indies Windsurfing (Vessup Point in the Red Hook area) rents kayaks. Also, there are some grass flats in the bay just west of Sapphire that are supposed to be decent, although I've never had much luck there.

St. John is probably a better destination for fly fishing if you get a chance. Down by the Annaberg ruins in Leinster (sp?) Bay is a great flats spot and also further down the beach in Water Lemon Bay. I've heard Brown Bay is also worth checking out.

I've found some good info on flyfishing specific message boards so you may want to look around for that. Hope this helps.

Al,

Fishing regulations/license info is on this site...

Go to https://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/more_info/fishing/ and click on regulations.

Good Luck.
