*is fishing from the shore any good on the island of St. John? Also if it is good, are there local bait shops, guides etc?
Hello Richard,
There is fishing from the shore in St. John, I don't have any recomendations for spots to go - I hope others can make suggestions for that. Be aware however that National Park forbids fishing in and around its waters and shorelines so make sure you aren't doing that. You can get a map from the National Park Welcome Center in Cruz Bay that shows what is park property. I don't know of ny bait shops. And guides are often deep sea fishing or fishing where they take you out on a boat. There is an operation in St. John visit http://www.hikestjohnvi.com/ that offers fishing tours - their web site mentions that. So try that site and email and see if they have more information that can help you plan a fishing day on St. John.

There are several places one can fish from shore. Most often it is recommended to fish off to the side of the beach so that bathers are not disturbed. The National Park Service does allow fishing but limited to rod and reel type, no nets. ... and catch and release only.
Some of the beaches/locales include Maho, Francis, and Mary's creek. You can catch a whole variety of species ranging from barracudas to sharks to bonefish and tarpon. All depends on what lures you use.
As for precise local info, you can check out Neptune tackle in American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook close to the ferries and ask the guys behind the counter. They can also point you in the right direction if you are looking for a guide for STJ.
Hope this helped.
