I am making my first trip to the Virgin Islands in June. Will be there 8 days staying on St. Thomas. We plan to rent a car for the week and ferry it over to other islands. Is this practical or would it be cheaper to go to other islands and taxi? Can you really save on jewlery in particular an engagement ring and if so any recommended shops on specific islands? I have always been skeptical of buying jewlery because not being a jewler how do you know what you are getting? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

St. Thomas is THE place for jewlery - I'm sure others will have specific places and if I remember I'll look at my cteat sheet at home for the best places.

CAR!!!!! (or jeep).

Try House of Rajah on the waterfront. He is on Raadet's Gade.

Hello Eddie,

Renting a car is a great idea. You can only ferry with the car over to St. John - there are no other car barges. You can take passenger ferries to other islands. The St. John car barge is $35; you can easily spend $35 in taxis if you did an island tour and then beach hopped to a couple spots - with the car you can drive all over the island and stop where you like, when you like. So taking the car over is practical.

There are many jewelry stores in Charlotte Amalie and Havensight; spend a day looking from shop to shop at what is available; you will find some stores have the same pieces and you can comparison shop on price and also negotiate.

Good Luck.
