Hi,
I have always flown down on vacation, but, I'm thinking of doing a cruise in mid-July of this year. I have no clue where to even start, what the price range is, etc. I'm coming out of NY. Any advice?

Christine,

There are tons of folks more knowlegible than me on these matters but I know there are some things to consider:

July would be hurricane season but with radar, sonar, and Darth Vadar, this can be mostly forewarned so your safety shouldn't be in jeapordy. Check the cruiseline websites for itinerarys...some pull out of the Caribbean during the summer and go to Europe or Alaska.

Some, maybe all of the Caribbean Islands slow down during the summer. This can be good and bad. Peaceful and maybe lower prices but some fun side excursions may not be available.

A cruise is a wonderful way to get exposed to different ports...maybe come back later for longer stays...as we do in St Croix. As much as I love palm trees over pine trees...I think an Alaskan summer cruise would be fun...but I still prefer sandals to mukaluks (sp?)

May want to think about trip insurance for a summer trip to paradise (Caribbean Islands). Note: Not meant to scare...hurricanes are longshots but shouldn't be ignored when you spend groups of money on a trip.

Cruise ships detour around hurricanes even if ther eis a slight chance of landfall. There are a few ships that sail from New York. Most are longer than the normal 7 day cruise. I know of the Norweigen Dawn, Voyager of the Seas, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 that sail from up there. Go to cruisecritic.com. It will lead you to all the cruises out there. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I'll check out cruisecritic. I've been looking and looking. I always come down in the summer, and I read that yes, they do go back to land if a hurricane is threatening. I'll have to hope for the best and look into insurance. The cruises from NY are mostly 8 day, with a day in Puerto Rico, a day in STT, and a day in Tortola, BVI and then back priced at around $1500 per person and up. I found that if I rent a car for a day for $150 and drive to Jacksonville, FL and take a 7 day I get to stop in more places and it's half the price at $800 per person and up. I also saw that booking last minute might work, it's pretty cheap. Any other advice from those who've done a cruise would be greatly appreciated!
