curran17,

Within the last 4-5 years there have been a few STT-STX ferry operators. Mermaid Fast Ferry and VI Fast Ferry around 2003... maybe 2002. The latter was around during season through to 2005. Then there was Island Lynx Ferry for several months in mid to late 2006. Smith's Ferry in 2007.

The STX ferry doesn't operate every day - I think it's Thur through Mon.

The ride going to STX is usually VERY rough - almost like a roller coaster, so it's an adventure in itself just being on that boat.

Regarding the ferry-- I was told by the locals that it is not reliable and as previously stated very rough and an adventure in itself. It also is NOT a day trip from STT. My husband and I take the Cape Air flight (20 minutes) to St. Croix an stay for 4-5 nights in St.Croix. If you have not been to STX it is wonderful and has a different flavor to it than either St.Thomas or St.John. It is more of a residential island. The golf is wonderful too.

The ferry runs Friday thru Monday. Phone # is 775.7292. Round trip fare is $90. They ARE reliable and you CAN do it in a day but it is a long trip, about 1.5 hours. The ferry leaves STT for STX at 9:30 am and 6:45 pm and from STX to STT I think it's 7:30-ish am and then 4:30 pm. If the seas are only around 3-4 feet the ride isn't too bad but if there are swells and seas above 5 feet it can get rough. If $ is no object take the seaplane but if you're on a tight budget the ferry is do-able.

The seaplane is sweet and not just for the wealthy. $85-110 each way, takes 25 minutes, no airport/security hassles, comes right downtown C'Sted. It runs about every 30 minutes daily.
