What is the easiest/cheapest way to get from St John to St Croix? I haven't been able to find it on any ferry schedules. We thought it might be fun to go over and tour the Cruzan rum factory. Any input???

isab,
There us no ferry service to or from STJ to STX. You have to go via STT.

There is no quick and easy way to travel between St. John and St. Croix. After taking the ferry to St. Thomas you will need to either take the ferry (Sea Trans 340-776-5494) only operating Fridays-Mondays or the seaplane (Seaborne 340-773-6442). This process takes the day one way. Definitely worth visiting St. Croix, but plan on spending the night (or two) and really enjoy the islands sights. Plus you might want to call the Rum Factory to be sure they are operating tours on a given day (340-692-2280).

The rum distillery tour takes less than an hour. Not trying to discourage you from visiting an island that I love, but the time involved in travel leaves very little time actually on the island. If you've been to a distillery or winery stateside you will have the basic gist fo the process. If it were me, I would plan to spend more time on STX, or plan to stay there on another trip. Whatever you decide, have fun.

The rum factory tour is NOTHING like you will see on some other islands in the Caribbean - we did a tour on Martinique and it was beautifully landscaped and full of history. The rum factory on St. Croix is just a factory, basically. I wouldn't make a special trip over for the factory, but if you could do a trip on the seaplane early, catch a tour and then do a half day at Buck Island and maybe go back to STJ the next morning it would be okay - but I guarantee you will remember a whole lot more about Buck Island than you will the rum factory!

I'm with Joanne - St. Croix is really a pretty wide open island and I'd plan to spend a couple of days there in order to truly enjoy what it has to offer. There's a lot to see. Although it seems to be a small island, it can take forever to get from one end to the other!

A tour of St George's Botanical gardens and Whim Great house would be much more interesting and give you some flavor of StX.

If you can't make the distillery in person, go via their excellent website http://cruzanrum.com/
Really well done and entertaining.
