Do you have to have a passport to ride the ferry to th BVI, or can you use a birth certificate? It says on this site that form of citizenship is required, but since we are US citizens i wasnt sure if that means a passport, ID (drivers license) or birth cert?? anyone know? Please help! Thanks!!!!
A passport or passport card is required for ferry travel between the USVI and BVI.
that is true, the passport or passport card would be required.
Just to clarify, you USED to be able to travel with a driver's license or similar ID together with a birth certificate but now you MUST have a passport or a passport card.
What if you're renting a boat on St. John and then mooring off Jost Van Dyke? Would you be required to show a passport swimming from a boat... or would you just get in trouble if you didn't have your passport with you?
When you go to the BVI you are technically entering a foreign country and you need to show proof of citizenship. If you swim ashore from a boat that has not cleared, you are violating international law and, if you are caught, you will be subject to fines and or imprisonment.
If renting a boat on STJ you must clear the boat at Customs on Jost - they are aware of the boats coming over for the day.
