I am arriving in St. Thomas around 5:00pm with a destination of Tortola Road Town area. I don't see any ferry service that leaves around 6:00PM or later. Any idea how to get to Road town after 6:00PM? My alternative is to get a hotel room and catch a ferry the next morning.

thanks for any suggestions.

Get a hotel room. You may, however be able to rent a private boat but can't remember the name of the service. Customs/immigration will be closed so for the day so it might be best to wait for the regular ferry the next day.
Best western, beachcomber by airport and are close to the downtown ferry service. Windward passage hotel (did they change the name?) Is closest to ferry dock and French town has lots of nice places for dinner.

Your only real choice is to overnight on STT. The private taxi operation will be hugely expensive.

Best Western Emerald Beach, Island Beachcomber and Best Western Caribe are all on the airport road on a nice beach and a short taxi ride to the Charlotte Amalie ferry. Windward Passage on the waterfront is walkable from the ferry and Ronnie at Crystal Palace B&B above town will get you to the ferry down the hill in the morning!
