In today's paper there was an article about the fare for the ferries between St Thomas and St John being increased again. It's now $5 each way from/to Red Hook and $3 dollars per bag. The fare has also increased from CA to St John, but I can't remember what it is. I think $11 or $12 each way.
Senior citizens and commuters aren't facing an increase and it's only supposed to be temporary, but so was the last increase.

So this is a temporary increase of the former temporary increase, which was suppose to end in Dec. 05.

Last time I was at the ferry dock in Red Hook, I don't recall seeing anything different from the $3 that was posted. I will have to check tomorrow, if I get that way.

Kate: The meaning of "temporary" in the VI is "forever!" 😉

Promo: I definitely feel that this is a tax on the folks who stay on St John. No way you can get there without baggage or the ferry. Kinda stuck. The ferry companies are bemoaing their fate, but $3 a bag is a gold mine.

This may be comparing apples and oranges, but the ferry from Fajardo PR to Vieques is $2 each way and it's a 90 minute trip.

Eastie, it definitely is a tax on the folks to STJ. But I'm going to beat it by a bit this year.

See I'm going to turn 62 y.o. about two weeks before I get on that ferry and will insist on the senior fare.

But do me a favor and don't tell anyone my age. Most of the girls on the island think I'm 36.

promoguy
when do we become seniors to get the senior rate. Maybe since they increased the charge, they too have increased the age for the discount. Heck, you're a senior at age 50 for AARP. Ya think the near bankrupt ferry will give a 50yr old a break,,,,,or a break on luggage if one is full of depends,,,,I don't think so. Guess we must remember, we are in paradise and just pay..

Sleeper, The age for senior is 62 y.o. But it's on the ferry ride over nothing to do with the luggage. Truth of the matter is that if they stick us with that new baggage fee the savings adds to the over all cost.

Yeah, and AARP makes you a senior to get your lobbying money earlier. They know if they wait longer they'll be losing folks to well, you know!!! Anyway, AARP sucks on their politics, so I guess you know where I'm coming from. Was a member one year and dropped them like a brick.

I believe that the senior rate only applies to islanders who carry a "senior citizen" card. Do not think that tourists, frequent visitors, or even seniors who pay DPNR fees and car registrations are included. I wish that they were.
