All-
I'll be visiting St John in June and am in the process of securing rental cars, etc. I see there are two ferry docks on St Thomas that go to St John; is there one over the other that I should use?

Thanks for your help!

I would advise that you rent the car in St John and NOT in St Thomas. Most companies will not allow you to go to St John with their car or if they do and it breaks down, you are responsible for getting it back to them, which means...you pay for the tow, you get it on the ferry, you tow it to their St Thomas location. I have actually had this happen and it ruined a whole day of vacation just dealing with it.

Try Courtesy Car Rental for reasonable rates and great service. It's owned by a husband and wife couple named Greg and Josephine.

For more information, pictures of cars and credit card authorization form, click on http://www.courtesycarrental.com.

They also have a toll-free number, (866) 776-4228

Thanks all, I'm looking at getting a rental car on St John, but I'm wondering which passenger ferry I should take to actually get over to St John. Is one closer to the airport or does it not matter which one I take? Thanks for the advice, it has all been extremely helpful.

The Charlotte Amalie ferry terminal is very close to the airport while the Red Hook ferry is way over on the East end of the island and to get there entails a trip across island. Check the ferry schedules/rates at the top of this page to see which would better accomodate you in terms of your arrival time, If you should have a delayed or late arrival and think you might miss the last CA/STJ ferry, check with the dispatcher at the airport and they'll ensure you get to Red Hook. Have a wonderful vacation. Cheers!

It doesn't really matter which ferry you take. It's not a critical decision. Some people have strong preferences, but either one will get you to STJ. The CA ferry is a shorter drive from the airport and a longer boat ride. The Red Hook ferry is a longer trip from the airport, then a shorter boat ride. Total costs pretty much balance out. We usually get the Red Hook ferry, but if the dispatcher steers us to the CA ferry for one reason or another, we're happy to go with the flow. We enjoy the trip across STT, some people seem to find it arduous. It helps us shift over to Island Time and we've met some nice folks in the taxi. We're certainly in no hurry, so aren't about to rush and stress to try to make a particular ferry. Another will come and we get to sit, slow down and savor the beauty of it all.

I'm with Lex. Once you hit the rum punch at the airport, it really doesn't matter any more- not necessarily because of the rum itself but it's your vacation world. We usually go to St. John on the CA and come back on the Red Hook. But we may change our mind next time.

Personally I find the Charlotte Amalie ferry much more relaxing than schlepping all the way to Red Hook on a cab and then waiting for the ferry there. It's a longer ride but it eliminates one leg of putting bags in, taking them out, etc. That said, the Red Hook ferry runs later so that could be a deciding factor for you as well.
