Has anyone used the public ferry to get from StJ to Virgin Gorda?
I want to spend the day on Virgin Gorda at the Baths. I do not want to do a tour because they only stay for an hour or two.
Hello Summerwaters,
Sure people use the ferry to get to Virgin Gorda. Been a few years but I've taken it from St. Thomas. Did you have questions about the ferry?

sumerwaters: When you go on a tour, you get a sampling of the BVI. You will stop at a couple of places. The crew will entertain you. You will either stop somewhere for lunch or it will be on your boat. Most have some sort of open bar included. The ferry gives you public transportation to Spanish Town. Period. It all depends what sort of day you want.
I do want to spend as long as possible at the baths. I have been to the BVI numerous times to various places. We were on a weeklong ocean kayaking expedition in the BVI last year and got to spend a lot of time on many islands--but not the Gorda. I want to take a ferry to spend the whole day doing what I want on the Gorda.
The tours that I have taken in years past spend about 2 hours there at best. I need all day to explore!! I can bring my own lunch. I do need info to know how dependable are these ferrties and how long does it take to get from StT or StJ to the Gorda. Do the ferries stop long enough to go thru customs and where would I do this?
The ferry takes you to Customs, usually at Spanish Town.
Thanks East Ender. So I will stay on the ferry until Spanish Town then will go thru customs. Is there a customs fee? Payable in US cash? Then when I get back on the ferry that afternoon will I need to go thru again? How long will the ferry take from StJ to the Gorda?
When you return to the United States you will go back through Customs in St John. Your main concern is to have your passport handy. The BVI speaks US $. The time for the ferry back depends on whether they have to stop somewhere (Road Town or West End). Can't say I have ever taken public transportation back from Virgin Gorda, but suspect the time is around an hour.
Sumerwaters - could you tell me the name of the company you sea kayaked with in the BVI, it sounds like a great way to see them.
Thanks,
Lisamay
Arawak expeditions is the name of the St John baed company. They will do trips as well as beach camping trips. These are great trips. Check out their web site. I will be doing some short paddles with them in December when I visit.
Thanks for the info, the trips look fun.
