Does anyone know (I'm sure lots of you do, who am I kidding) if the posted RT fare from Cruz Bay to Jost Van Dyke includes the fee to enter the BVIs? Do we stop at Sopers Hole at all or do they do the immigration thing at Jost?

Look in one of the VI travel guides - It's like $25 RT from Tortola to Jost.

This goes back two years ago when we decided to go on a day trip to Tortola. It seemed that those going by ferry ahead of us had to enter BVI's at Sopers Hole.

The funny thing was that we were so used to paying $20.00 on the catamaran trips to JVD that we were surprised that, I think, we paid something like only 5.00. Not sure why????

So "Russell", you think that the ferry fee includes $5.00 to cover our entry into the BVIs? We went via boat to Virgin Gorda last year and were told up front that we had to pay the $20 or so for the entry fee but it was a charter so that made sense. This ferry thing seems different and I'm wondering if its already included or when you go "publically" they reduce it? Islander are you there?

So, am I to understand that when you ferry from STT to Jost, you have to stop at STJ and then again at Tortola before you ever get to Jost? How long does this trip take from STT to sitting at Foxy's???

Great questions! Five of us will also be making this trip on 11/26. Can anyone help with these curiosity/budget/time questions? =)

This website, if you go to Ferry Schedules at the top, gives the run down on time from STT to STJ to JVD which they say is total of 45 minutes or so from STJ, but we pay no attention to approximate times when in the VIs. Since there's only one ferry over and one back (I think), who cares- ya get there when ya get there and since it leaves STJ about 8:30 in the AM or so, I think you'd be at whatever bar way before lunch. Just order something with orange juice or tomato juice so you can call it breakfast. I just want to know how much cold cash to bring, hence my original question. Hello Islander.......

Not sure who "russell" is but I do remember just checking through customs in Tortola West End and maybe paid 5.00 or it could have been included. It definitely isn't a charter 20.00 thing. Now that being said, we only stayed on Tortola, but you cleared in Tortola so that would be it for customs.

The ferry is $50 RT. Leaves Red Hook at 8:00, sometimes SHARP. Goes to STJ, then to JVD although I have stopped in West End, once even to change ferries. They'll give you a ticket for coming back, ask if they don't. Customs will meet you at the ferry dock in Great Harbour, although once I was given the manifest and had to check myself in when they were running late. Be ready on time for return, it may even leave early, seldom late... although you wish you could spend more time in my favorite place.

Hello Karrieb,

Its been about 3 months since we updated the ferry page and it looks like the JVD ferry price has changed and the St. John CA ferry should be back to its normal hours... so let me get some calls in and I'll get the whole page updated and also the answer to your question about the tax.

Thanks since this hasn't been addressed yet- am I paying "extra" ,beyond the RT price to go through Customs. Maybe I should have gotten my head out of the clouds when I first wrote this. Promo- I thought you were the one in the Lucy picture being confused with Russell Crowe but maybe I got that wrong too- busy week, time for a Red Stripe to prepare for our trip back to STJ in TEN DAYS AND COUNTING!!

Karrie, you're right about that Russell thing. How do you expect me to remember from one thread to the other.

We didn't pay anything extra. But remember that was up to Tortola customs only. Don't mean to change the subject, but given the short period of time you will spend on JVD you actually might want to consider doing a Tortola tour. You can rent a car and go to some some beautiful beaches on their north shore.
I believe the last ferry back to STJ is about 5.00 pm. Just a thought..

Jees Promoguy, if someone confused my husband with Russell Crowe, I think he'd remember that (LOL!!!). Anyway, JVD came up because we have yet to get to the Soggy Dollar Bar, check out that bubbling pool, etc. We've only been to Foxy's. But a tour of Tortola is on the short list which means we have to plan another trip back to STJ as homebase. 10 days and counting!

Hello karrieb,

Info. as of calling today... For STT/STJ -Jost the schedule is the same as what we have. The price is $50 for adults round trip and $40 for children and this does include the fees/departure taxes. Immigration is checked in Great Harbor Tortola.

Ok, so maybe I'm a little slow - bear with me. So it goes like this - leave STT, go to STJ to pick up passengers, go to Tortola to do the immigration check in, THEN on to Jost. Is this repeated in reverse then on the way back? No wonder there is little time to spend on Jost. Like 3-4 hours?
