i want to rent a car at airport and take car ferry to st john. How long is trip to red hook? Do you think this is a better idea than ferrying to st john and renting car?
Depending on the time of day, number of ships in and the route figure 30 - 45 minutes. Don't think it really matters except if you run into mechanical problems with the car on STJ. You will be SOL waiting for a mechanic to come over from STT. Some companies will not let you take the cars over. Weigh the possible inconvenience vs $$$ saved, if any.

The opinions on this are pretty much balanced it seems. Some folks say getting the car on St. Thomas for a little less, loading up the luggage one time, not having to take a taxi, having the option of stopping at a large grocery store on St. Thomas to pick up some things before getting on the barge... makes renting on St. Thomas worthwhile. Other folks say taking a taxi & the ferry isn't a big deal and find it a relaxing way to start the trip and prefer to rent on St. John as it supports the rental companies there, often comes with the perk of being able to park in the rental agencies Cruz Bay office parking lot (a perk because parking in Cruz Bay is limited) and they feel more at ease knowing if something happens (mechanical or accident) the agency is on the same island. So it depends on which reasons make the most sense to you.
