Can someone tell me exactly where I go to get on the Ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St John?

At the eastern end of the waterfront apron - usually marked off with cones and rope - there is a covered bench and taxi pull off area - inside the boat basin defined to seaward by the USCG pier extension.

"is that where you buy the ticket"

Yes, you buy the ticket at the pier. There are no advance tickets sold.

I assume any cabbie would know where to take us if we asked (coming from airport)

You will have to specify the Charlotte Amalie (or downtown) ferry rather than the Red Hook ferry. Given that information they will know.
