i am heading to st thomas next month and will need to take a taxi from the airport to redhook. should i have any concerns about catching a cab by myself? are they considered to be relatively safe? if anyone has any info on the best way for a single gal to get around the island i would appreciate it.

In my best island voice

no worries mon 🙂

STT is no different than being in Myrtle Beach SC - you just need to pay attention when you are alone

And remember Dad's Rule - NOTHING GOOD HAPPENS AFTER MIDNIGHT

also i've never seen anyone alone in a cab. unless you've reserved a taxi ahead to pick you up. when you retrieve your bags , walk outside and there are taxis ( vans ) going to red hook. usually they fill the vans to capacity . i've never had a problem alone and every driver i've had was friendly/safe.

Taxis at the airport are regulated, licensed, set rates, dispatcher on site; and as mentioned they typically don't depart with just one person but try to gather a full van with people going in the same direction.

As for getting around the island in general; how long is your visit, what do you have planned?

You wil not have a problem with using approved taxis. I have never heard anything negative about the safarri bus' either. Just remember not to get your self in a position or a location that could be a problem. Avoid late night returns, don't flash a lot of money, don't wear jewlrey etc.

You will not have a problem.

Hi,

I too am traveling to STT alone. I was thinking of renting a car, but after pricing it out, and reading various web sites I think the taxi route is the best way to go. Did you think about renting a car? or do you plan on relying on the taxis?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Depending on where you are staying and what you want to do will drive the taxi decision

However a week of taxi fares add up real quick.

I was on STT for a month in August renovating our condo and I would have ded if I didn't have a car. The last 2 weeks I was there by myself and spent some time every single day out and about exploring, shopping, sightseeing, beaching etc. The taxis charges PER PERSON PER DESTINATION so even if you hop into a cab with some other people it is not as if you can share the cost and reduce your outlay, you still have your own fare no matter what. A car of your own means you can run about freely and hop around without a hassle. The only downside is parking in Charlotte Amalie, where the only viable choice is the Municipal Lot...which can get crowded and close by noon. Remember, it is free parking in that lot on the weekends! Our condo is on the North Shore and I had such a terrific time exploring that new side of the island (new to me anyway). Another thing, when you do hop into a cab, the driver wants to fill up his van and so he may wait for others to come along or he may cruise thru town looking for fares, delaying your departure. Then there is the matter of dropping off all these people at their respective locations...great, if yours comes first geographically, but what if your destination is the furthest...you can have a LONG trip! All in all, a car rental is the best bet in my opinion.
