🙁 We were in the USVI last April, and I really felt like I'd found heaven. I was talking to my husband, and I don't think we're going to be able to afford to get back down this year. Rats. I was really hoping we could. I'll have to settle for Port Aransas (island off the Texas coast), which I love, but isn't quite the USVI experience. 😉 It's still the ocean, but defintely not the same. Wish we could get some better deals out of DFW!

Cheer up...there's always next year. That's what we said last year when things didn't work out and we are going this summer for 12 days. Just keep your eye on the ball and make it happen.
Enjoy PA. The water isn't nearly as blue but they are pretty laid back in their own way.

Gari-Ann, Just the fact that you've been once and know you want to get back there says you've been blessed with more than most people. Skip a year to save - and plan to come back again in 08. Do you have a miles credit card? I find that they help with airline tickets if you don't mind using credit cards.

I'm from Texas as well and have averaged a trip a year to St John since 1988. Flights from DFW have always been high, although thru March 29 AA has a $280.00 RT special which is about as low as I've seen it. About the only way we've been able to make it happen is with AA miles. And now Citibank has a debit/check card that gives miles so you don't have to use a credit card. My wife and I each have a checking account and argue who's going to pay for what so we can get the miles. We pay for everything possible with the bank cards. Search on-line for various offers with bonus miles when opening an account. Last year we flew to St Thomas for a total of $30.00.

We usually take advantage of the last minute specials thru the various Villa rental companies and since we are repeat customers with almost all rarely do we pay security deposits and can negotiate even lower rates. We almost always go during the off season and try to get as many family members or friends to go as well and that helps with the overall costs as well.

For a real, true, getaway from it all vacation I've never been anywhere that comes close to St John. All my family and friends who have gone agree as well.

I was hoping to take advantage of the 280. AA rate, but for mid March, which I guess is considered spring break, the best we could do is 389. Still not a bad deal, but we had to book strange days, could not travel on a weekend, etc. But, since my daughter had limited time off from college, we have to "settle" for a Mon. to Fri. trip. Don't feel too sorry for me, I'm going back in July with my tennis buds in July for a week. YIPEE!! Using ff miles for that trip and dividing the villa by 4 makes it a very affordable trip.

Gari-Ann, maybe that is your solution. Leave hubby at home to mind the house, dogs, kids, and take a girl trip. It is much more affordable. Of course, not as romantic.

You're kidding? I haven't seen that anywhere, and I've been checking almost daily.

I'd love to go, with or without hubby. 😉 Just kidding. Actually, a girls trip would be wonderful, but I don't think my girlfriends would do it....they tend to want to do everything with their husbands...can you imagine? LOL

I'll keep checking though. In any case, I'll just keep looking at the web cams. That's torture though, I swear. 😉

I know exactly how you feel...I miss it so much when I'm not there. We save up all year so we can afford the trip 🙂

What site are you finding the 280 flights? I've checked several sites, and they are all over $400.

This is encouraging though!

I went directly to www.aa.com and inserted the dates March 21-28, 2 people, and that is the price that comes up. (as of 2 min. ago) It can change at any time, but it has been that amount since I started looking a week age.

Good luck!

How bizarre, I just looked, and I plugged in those dates on aa.com, and it was $374 per person. However, there's a special for Puerto Rico at $218 per person out of DFW. 😉

Just for fun, I plugged in the same dates and it came back with more than one flight option at $280, from DFW to STT. I looked at some of the seat availability, and it looks like the flights are currently only about half full.

Maybe check your settings and make sure you do not have any limitations your search (like non-stop, or certain departure or arrival times). The $280 fare appears to be available to me. Good luck.

Go to aa.com and sign-up for the Net SAAver alerts. I have all kinds of scenarios entered to get from DFW to STT. Then whenever you visit the site it will have your choices on the front page. That's how I knew about the $280RT fare. It does end in March however. We're going in June and if flights are still that cheap we'll pay cash and save the miles for more expensive flights

I never understood how the people on the board felt about the US-VI and their "addiction" to the islands. I honeymooned there this past September and I cant stop thinking about going back. There are so many other places in the world that I hoped to see...but I only want to go back to the Virgin Islands.

I live about an hour from Corpus Christi - there is NO comparison except for the darn salt. Even the salt isn't a bother in the VI's.

If you ever need a shoulder to cry on - let me know...I'm always here.

Wishing I were drinking a Bushwhacker at Coki Point

Hey Jeniffer! I love Port A, and it's a good place for these parts, but I know what you mean about dreaming of the USVI. We love going to Port A because we rent a house and bring our dogs. We bike all over the island, and it really is peaceful. But you don't get to snorkel, you don't get to hear those awesome caribbean accents, the atmosphere is different, etc. I bet your honeymoon was incredible!

Our honeymoon was outstanding. Neither of us had ever been so it was a great experience. The best part was not having our cell phones. I worried that my hubby would die without his phone...but it effected me the most. LOL

I just cant wait to go back - sooner the better!!! I'm thinking the first of June would be good.

Now I just have to convince my hubby. 🙂

have a great weekend
