*We are thinking of planning a vacation with a four and 6 year old. Are there fun things to do for kids?
The VI is not a big 'family' spot, but there are things that they will enjoy. Coral World, Atlantis Submarine, Paradise Point Tramway, loads of beaches, daysails, ferry over to STJ, the pool at your hotel...
We stayed at cinnamon bay campgrounds. It was fabulous! (Ok so I really mean Fun!) lots of animals to see, coconuts, beautiful beaches, games to rent, I think it's very family friendly... they also have water activities to rent - windsurfing, snorkling etc... if they're ever open!
marty has lots of great excursions in his post too!
I think Marty meant to say USVI is not family like Disneyland or similar so if your idea of a family vacation is along those lines, USVI may not be your cup of tea. If kids like seeing fish, water, sand, sun, etc., then go and enjoy.
Good point Chris!
St. John can be the family vacation of a lifetime,,,, for the right family. I have seen impatient types who thought the locals were rude and the kids wanted to play video games and everyone seemed unhappy. A bit more "balanced" parents with kids of any age that are brought up away from the materialistic, mall hanging, MTV watching culture really enjoy it.
St.John is much, much more educational than Disney
even can be!!!!!!!!
In my opinion, there is no better place to take a family vacation then STJ. My parents brought my brother and I there many times growing up in the 70's,80's, and 90's and is my absolute favorite place in the world. Now that I am married with my own children, we go every year for a few weeks along with. Although they are young, they can not wait until we go again. By the way, it's a great way to see my parents and for them to spend quality time with the grandchildren.
If you enjoy, the water, snorkeling, and playing in the carefree beautiful beaches with your children then this place is for you. You can always go over to STT to some attractions but there is much to do on STJ. The only negative is that your 4 year old and six year old will want to go back every year. Don't worry because thatis a very good thing.
We've been going to St. John since '99; with our child since she was 6 mos. in 2002. We've never worried about things for us to do with her because we've had her in the water since about 6 months and she is very energetic and willing to walk/run all day. St. John is very family friendly as long as you realize the pace is slow. I agree with "mutton" that if your kids are more into "indoor" activities, there's not much for them to do.
This year our daughter will be snorkeling, playing tennis, and joining us on some of the milder trails and she's only 3 1/2. She refers to St. John as "her" island and counts the days until she can go again.
Right now, it's only 27 days!!!
