If someone was going to move to the Islands for 2 years and had kids how would you rate family life, sense of community, and welcoming new folks to the islands? Also are there any churches and what do locals do for fun?

Dear Greenehouse,
Thanx for your inquiry! You will hopefully get some good responses on the relocation forum! We have LOTS of churches here! Not a shortage by any means and lots of different religions as well. Good Luck to you! I wish you well! 🙂

Yes, there are many churches with most denominations represented. Churches are a big part of the culture in most of the Caribbean.

There are many family activities planned by schools, churches, government, malls, private organizations, etc so there's always something other than the beach for families/kids to do. For example, the Tillett Fair in November will have craft classes just for kids. There are music, theater, sports, dance, Boy Scouts, etc groups just for kids. It's all a matter of how involved you and your family want to be. Everything is here - just not on as large a scale as you might find in the States.

greenehouse: you seriously need to go to the "relocation forum" on this VINow site which has already been pointed out. There are innumerable archival moving stories and posts on that forum relating to moving here with children, schooling issues, etc.

As much as the responding posters on this vacation forum have good intentions, best you really hie thee over to the relocation forum and read, read, read. Cheers!

Greenehouse-

I have been on the island for about 4 months now, and have a 6-year-old son. I would have to say that matters pertaining to my son have been the most difficult adjustment. First, we decided on a private school for my son. The private school has its good points and bad, but I think you would get that anywhere. Second, since we do not live in a typical neighborhood it is not possible for him to go outside and play with neighborhood kids. You will have to make an effort to get together with people at the park, etc. Third, there are several extra activities on the island, but you have to search for them. My experience has been that I don't get much information through the schools. People here on the board have been a big help.

All in all, I would say my son has adapted very well. Life on the island can be very conducive to quality family time. My family has experienced a new side of St Thomas that we never saw while coming here a tourist. The people are very friendly, and usually willing to help if you give them a polite good morning and a smile. Of course there are always exceptions to this. As for churches...lots of choices for churches.
