thanks eastender. I took your advice and looked at villas. any info on Fairwinds Villa at Peterborg? Looks close to Magens Bay so I am familiar with location on island. anything else I should know about that side of island? Only been to STT twice and both times stayed at Frenchmans Reef.

ed: I am not familar with Fair WInds, but I will tell you that Peterborg is a residential area. No restaurants, groceries, etc. You will have a bit of a drive to most entertainment, although the golf course is fairly close as is Old Stone Farmhouse. The nearest beach is Magen's. Just depends what you all want to do!

ed,

Peterborg is a quiet residential area with a number of gated neighborhoods, ten minutes from downtown Charlotte Amalie, fifteen minutes to the East End. As East Ender said, you will need a car if you stay in Peterborg.

I have rented Fairwinds Villa the second week in February. It's web site is amazing and reasonably priced for the area. We were skeptical but another post on this website confirmed it should be ok. Great location and view. It apparently is just not luxuriously appointed. Said there were some plastic patio furniture on the decks and by the pool. The owner has been very good in communicating with me. I can let you know more when we return.

Fairwinds Villa is everything the website says it is. The main house consists of living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms (one upstairs) and 2-1/2 baths. The master bedroom is separate and has its own sitting room, large walk-in closet, laundry room, double sink bathroom and double showerhead shower. The only thing I could find that did not match the website was they apparently had new furniture in the living room from what was pictured. There are decks on all sides of the house with spectacular views. The pool is large and very clean with pool chairs, flotation mats, etc. A nice Weber grill is near the pool with a full tank of gas. The house is stocked to the hilt (salt, pepper, sugar, vegetable oil, etc. plus laundry detergent, dryer sheets, video and music CD's, lots of kitchen and bath soap, and even toothpaste). The towels are plush and very plentiful, both for showers and beach. There are flashlights in every room in case of a power outage, but we did not experience one. The drive to Fairwinds is fairly easy, with the exception of a short one lane road that has been bombed out. Just have to take it slow. They suggest you take out your trash everyday and we didn't which drew a few ants in the kitchen. We took our trash down to the dumpster, sprayed for the ants with a spray that was at the house, and that problem was solved. But that was our mistake. Fairwinds is not finished lavishly or luxurously, but it was clean, very comfortable, had a great location and we thought it was terrific. Can't wait to go back.

Our week was very relaxing. We spent most of our time in the pool at Fairwinds and just enjoyed spending time on the decks and reading and the views. We ate all breakfasts in and some dinners. We ate out at the Old Stone Farmhouse which is very close to Peterborg. Also, enjoyed Robert's American Grill and Bonnie's by the Sea, both at the Elysian Beach Resort and the Oceana in Frenchtown.

On Valentine's Day, we took a daysail on the Fantasy with Captain Pam and her first mate, Charlie. Sailed over to St. John, enjoyed snorkeling and beach time, lunch on the boat and sailed back to Red Hook. Charlie was absolutely great with me, since I do not swim and was afraid of water over my head. Parking at Red Hook is a real problem though with the construction they are doing.

The best grocery we found was Marina Market in Red Hook. Clean and a very good meat department for our nights at home.

Returned home on February 18 -- 82 degrees in St. Thomas and 11 degrees when we departed the plane in St. Louis. Welcome home!

Regarding Fairwinds Villa, I think you would be very happy there. Defintely cheaper if you share the cost with another couple unless you have a family with you. If you would like me to send you some pictures, please let me know. Good Luck!

glad you had a good time and the villa lived up to the website. it is always good to talk to someone who has been there. how close were you to Magens Beach? within walking distance? trying to go in may but airfares are over 1,000 per person right now from WV.

So glad to hear you enjoyed the Villa Jan! As it turns out, I was on STT while you were there...sort of last minute plans. I thought about that villa.

Glad to hear the report on that HUGE pool being a good place to swim. It is as large as it appears in the pics? You rarely see them that big at the villas.

I would not try walking to Magen's Beach from the villa. From the driveway, you overlook Magen's Beach and that whole inlet of water, but the roads and terrain between the two are not the best. Good luck on airfares. We paid $600 per person in February and I thought that was highway robbery.

Bluwater - wish you would have stopped by. Most of the time, we were relaxing by the pool. The pool was very good size and spotlessly clean. Went from about 3 to 8 feet deep with nice walk-in steps in the shallow end. I'll be sure to post a review on your site soon.

My wife and I are looking at renting fairwinds for our 25th anniversary. Do you have more pictures that you could share of the villa. It looks like it is perfect for what we want.

Thanks Jerry

Jerry,

Please search for my trip report from last September (06). I stayed at Fairwinds for 2 weeks and posted a bunch of photos. We enjoyed it immensely. The pool is HUGE - 38ft! The view is absolutely amazing - perched over the water on Peterborg's northside - with down island views of at least 6 islands.

Steff,

Found the report with pictures. Thanks a million. We will definately be booking this one. We have been to St Tomas twice now and are going back for a brief 5 day 4night trip on August 15th and staying at sapphire village instead of a private villa this time. We stayed at cayanne villa last time over by Red Hook and it is really nice if you are looking for somewhere differnet. The pool isn't large but good for 2 to 4 people and is in the sun all day. The pictures of it online do not lie.

Thanks again
Jer

Hi Steff
Saw the pics you posted from the Ritz etc.. Gabbie is getting so big and pretty. Hope you do come back and see the Fairwinds improvements since you were here like the new Living room furniture, new mesh lounges by the pool, new floats for the pool, new aluminum chairs for the outside decks, refrigerator, DVD, and a bunch more. Hope to hear from you.
David
