Hi All,

We are leaving for STT this saturday and will be renting a van since there are 6 adults in our group. The van rental is costing us 300$ for the week and some in our group want to take out additional insurance since they are in the insurance business and are concerned that if we have an accident while on the island their home policy will be affHi All
ected. Has anyone had any experience with this. The additional daily insurance will almost double our original rental cost. How many of you take out the additional insurance? And if anyone has had an accident driving on the islands in a rental car how was it handled? We are renting thru AAA and Hertz

Thanks for your feedback and helpful comments

Blu, I just got off the telephone with my agent and I was told the "safe driver discount" is actually called the "accident free discount". It applies to drivers that have been accident free for the previous three years and the discount is ~10% per driver. The discount is lost when a claim is filed and the policy holder is at fault. The agent said that if I was involved in an accident and I drove as defensively as possible and the other driver was at fault, I shouldn't have anything to worry about. Armed with my Nationwide insurance and Visa insurance, I guess I'm ok but run the risk of losing my 10% discount. True, I could lose it stateside as well, but as I asked in another post, am I more prone to being in an accident in STT?

Hi-

I believe that the type and value of the car you rent may be an issue. Some insurance policies do NOT cover Jeep-type rentals, whereas a regular vehicle WOULD be covered. In addition, there could be a dollar limit covered based on the price of the vehicle.

We charge our Vitara on AMEX, which covers us for vehicles valued up to $25,000, and does cover SUVs/Jeeps. Our car insurance company, NJ Manufacturers also covers this type of rental. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks so much for everyone's feedback. Our group has come to the conclusion that in order to enjoy our vacation with as much peace of mind that is possible it's better to be safe than sorry and buy the extra insurance. My friends don't want the stress of "what if". I know we will have a great time and this way if anything happens we will be covered.
