I am returning to St. Croix for summer break from Providence, RI, and am currently taking a flight on Spirit to San Juan (via Ft. Lauderdale) and either Cape Air or American Eagle from San Juan to St. Croix. I would like to fly Cape Air since it's $71 cheaper ($204 on Cape Air, $275 on American), and American has delays all the time, while Cape Air doesn't. However, what I thought would be a 2 hour connection time in San Juan, is now a 70-minute connection time due to Spirit and Cape Air changing their schedules. The Spirit flight arrives at 2:50 pm and the Cape Air flight leaves at 4:00. Because Spirit is on a different reservations system than Cape Air, they do not have a baggage agreement, and I would have to pick up my bags in San Juan and re-check them with Cape Air. Is it possible to do this within 70 minutes? I keep hearing bad stories about baggage claim in San Juan and I do not want to miss my Cape Air flight and have to wait three hours for the following flight at 7:15. Should I just pay the extra $71 to fly American and collect a little bit of mileage in the process? The American flight leaves at 4:45. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I did not have a problem collecting my bags last year to catch the Cape Air flight. Biggest issue was getting through security after claiming the bags. I believe I had ~ 1 hour. However, if baggage claim has gone down hill since then and you do not want to wait the additional time if you miss, I would consider paying the $71. Heck, your time is worth $23/hour.
Of course, the way American Eagle runs, they may cancel that flight anyway!
Guess that doesn't help much.
