We will be staying at Caneel in May. Last time we stayed there we attepted to eat at the Equator restaurant, but the night that we had reservations it rained (open air restaurant that apparently closes when it rains). We enjoy going into town and eating, but thought we would give Equator another try. Has anyone eaten there? Are some tables better than others (sunset view)? Just curious about the over all experience. Thanks.

The place is just perfect and so is the food and especially the view. Request a table with the best view possible - the staff usually try their best to help you get what you ask for at Caneel Bay 🙂
Thank you for the post!
You don't hear very much about The Equator on this forum. But, we have decided to give it a try for a "special" dinner during our upcoming trip, as well.
The location & ambiance of the restaurant look extraordinary. There is such a romantic feel to the open-air pavilion and the picture of this restaurant that is on the Caneel website is awesome.
It is nice to hear from a happy "former patron". Hopefully, we will be one, too!
Thanx!
Thanks for your response.
Sue: If the food equates to the View then you are in store for a great evening. We plan on dining early in the week...just in case we get rained out again. That will enable us to reschedule later that week. Enjoy.
We have the same plan.
Arrive on the island on Friday the 21st of April & will be at The Equator on Saturday night.
We are looking forward to strolling over to the bar after & enjoy the live music that they said will be playing from 8 - 10:30.
We have heard that the Caneel grounds are particularly beautiful at night.
We are counting on the weather to be spectacular!!
But, like you, we will have other days to schedule a "rain date", if neccesary.
We ate at Equator for the first time during our trip a few weeks ago. Both my wife and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a very gracious open air setting, lovely views of the lights of STT across the sound, and the food and its preparation were high quality.
Hope you all have a nice trip!
We just got back from our trip and ate at the Equator on 4/9/06. Make reservations for 6:15pm to see a beautiful sunset. Ask to be seated by the rail for the best view. You will need a reservation if you do not want to stand in a long line. They light up the sugar mill ruins and all the paths around the resort have little mushroom shaped lights. Our servers name was Beverly and she was spunky and friendly. I had the pasta special with a glass of wine and my husband had a chicken with pineapple rice dish. Both of us enjoyed our dinner but we are not "foodies". The dessert here was my favorite. It was called Banana Cheese Cake but it was unlike any cheesecake I've ever had before. It was a soft cake served with a vanilla ice cream flavored with Cruzan Rum, but not strong, There was a warm caramel sauce over the entire thing. It disappeared fast.We walked off our dinner along the resort path. We walked about 45 minutes on the path and didn't even get to the end of the property. There were golf carts picking up people and it was well lit so we felt safe. We layed in beach chairs and gazed at the stars. We did not see anyone else on the beach. This was a beautiful resort.
I was surprised by the people who brought their children to this restaurant. I did not see anything my kids would have eaten on the menu but maybe they had a childrens menu.
Thanx for the review!
My husband & I have a reservation for 6:15 this Sat nite (April 22nd).
Will be flying out of Boston, MA on Friday the 21st. Only 3 more days (unbelievable)!!
Can't wait for our romantic nite at The Equator. Hope we will have great weather & a star-filled sky, just like yours!!
We are anxious to stroll the grounds, as well. Sounds like a magical place at nite!
We'll look for you at the bar...
