Has anyone stayed at the Elysian resort? We are going there in October as a gift from my husband's aunt who owns a timeshare there. We are unable to get our hands on one of the condos and have to settle for the regular hotel room. Just wondering if it is even worth staying at.

If you don't want it, I'll take it.

What a wonderful aunt you have. Talk about a great gift. We own a timeshare at the Elysian and, spend 2 weeks there every year. We own a studio which is your basic hotel room with a mini-refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, hair-dryer, iron&board. This has always been fine for us because we do not spend our time on St. Thomas in our room. Most rooms have a nice view of the water. There is a small balcony with a couple chairs and table. There is a very well maintained pool at the resort. Robert's has great food but, can be a little pricey but, well worth the money. Page, who works at Robert's, is one of the best bartenders you'll ever meet. The owners, Kevin and Laura, are very hospitable. When in October will you be there? We will be there from 10/26-11/10. We have been all over the island and depending on what you like to do, we may be able to help with some suggestions. The biggest point we always make to people is to remember, you are on an island, not stateside. Life moves at a much slower pace. Relax and enjoy.

It's a very nice resort, well worth the stay. 🙂

Rachel: Here is another vote for Robert's. Page makes a mean Cosmo, their piano bar is great fun and you can get either a huge lobster or a 4 oz. steak. Try the She-Crab soup, BBQ shrimp with cheese grits or any of Kevin's specials- I had a Mahi and rack of lamb combo the other night that was terrific. I don't know if they will have Aynsley's open by then; it will be their casual beach side restaurant. They also run the pool bar...

I am also considering renting a car while I am there, is it that hard to drive on the opposite side?

Rachel: It is very difficult to drive on the wrong side of the road here! 😉 You end up road kill!! Have the person riding shotgun to yell "LEFT!!" every few moments, especially when turns are involved. You'll figure it out The taxi rates will kill you...!

Driving on the "wrong" side of the road does take some getting used to but, as my husband-"on island time" says
it's just like driving on the right but, you're on the other side of the road. (He can be a smart-a$$ at times) Honestly though, it's not that difficult. There are signs posted all over on the side of the roads reminding you to stay left. The hardest part is making turns. Give it a try and have fun!!

You really should rent a car as that is the only way to see everything STT has to offer
We were nervous the first time we drove but was used to it by that evening
NO WORRIES youll be on island time

Rachael,
There are advantages of driving on the left. You can roll down your window a get your mail (never have to get out of your car. You can stop and talk to your friend at the side of the road (he/she doesn't have to stand in the middle of the road). Also sitting in the car on the left hand side you will not feel the full impact of the head on accident caused by someone that forgot to stay left. Not only do you have to think left all the time, Keep looking for the drivers in front of you who forgot to think left.

I have NO PROBLEM driving left when i visit STT. I am so conscious of it. Problem is, when i return home, I continue to drive left in PHILADELPHIA (Yikes).

To make matters worse, when we went to Disney World last month, I DROVE LEFT! I guess it was being in a rental car and foreign place. I drove left on my resort grounds and people were honking at me before I realized. Darn! Geoff was in the car with me and even HE didn't say anything. Left we went!

Ok, so, even if you successfully drive left in STT, make sure you switch back when you get home 🙂
