hi all,
i was wondering which car rental place at the airport has the easiest access when you get off the plane, [after collecting luggage]
they all seem close in price. just can't decide which one, don't want to take a shuttle or taxi.
any info? thanks, scooby

If you are planning to go to St John and bring a car, make sure that you ask if it is possible to take the rental car on the ferry.
Some don't let you take the off of St Thomas. Hertz had the best price when we were there, and it was OK to take to other islands.
Good luck, it is somewhat difficut to drive in St Thomas at first since they drive on the left! Have fun!

Hertz or Avis.

Better check with the rental agency about taking the vehicle to STJ from STT. Last time we were there Hertz said no. Avis did allow it.

We booked Budget last year, and again this year. It's minimum service, at best, but they had same rates as the others and they allow you to take the car on the ferry to St. John. DO check the vehicle for damage and note any on their form prior to leaving. Don't expect a car in the same condition as you'd get in the States. In fact, I think I circled the entire car as "Dinged or Dented" last year! Didn't really matter to me, though, because it got us from "here to there" just fine. Have a great time!

the budget cars sound pretty beat up. can anyone else comment on this? also can anyone comment on hertz? service [any trouble] and condition of cars? thanks for any info, scooby

We just returned from STT. We rented a jeep from Budget for $217 for the whole week with unlimited mileage. We were also able to take it over to St. John Island on the car ferry. One of the best times I ever had. It really sucked having to come back home......

Hey Camille....I am visiting St John in April and looked at Budget to rent...how did you get such a good price. The website says $349 for the week. Just wondering if I could get the same deal somehow. Thanks

Budget is not at the airport. When my mom came to visit she rented a car from them and luckily my boyfriend was able to drive us from the airport to Budget. However, when we returned the car to Budget on her way back to the airport they were closed in the middle of the afternoon and I had to call them to get someone to come to the office to check the car back in. I do believe they had the best rate, but they are much more inconvenient than the other car rental places who have desks right in the same exact place you pick up your baggage.

K,

i believe budget has more than one stt location. they were first rental agency on right coming into baggage claim area since at least 0ct 04 and as late as a month ago. didn't get the great rate on jeep but did get free upgrade in dec and for 5 days was less than 220 total.

Budget is at the airport and the rental counter sits alongside the others - Avis, Hertz and I think Thrifty. I've rented from Budget a few times. Cars are not beat up/. Last car I got from them was brand new, CD player, etc. So new it made me nervous driving around the islands. I like the cars to have a little wear on them so my little dings aren't so noticable. Island driving is tough and I don't want to hold my breath at every turn.

Rented from Hertz the year before...beautiful car, but check engine light stayed on the whole time.

None are more convenient than the others with regard to airprots rentals. All of the counters are right there and the terminal is (snapping fingers) just that small.

Don't worry about this part. You'll see.

I'm the one who posted that my Budget car was really dented and dinged-up. It's my only experience renting from Budget, and I promise to let you all know how my next experience is. We're renting a Tauras (or similar) Feb 5-11. I never judge an establishment on one experience, but I must confess that the car we got last time was really ugly. More to come....
