Hi guys,

How long would it take to take a taxi or drive from the ferry dock at downtown to Sapphire beach around 6:15pm weekday?

I plan to take the 5:00pm ferry from St. Croix to arrive St. Thomas at 6:15pm. Then, take a taxi to Supphire Beach to pick up a rental car (from Budget). And then, take the last car ferry at 7:15pm ( 1 hr after the ferry landed at downtown ) to go to St. John. ( I will stay in Cinnamon Bay campground on that night )

Does my plan sounds OK to you guys? or Is it too tight?

Thank you in advance for your opinions....

🙂

PS:
- My other choice is to pick up the car from Havensight (another Budget location), and drive it to Red Hook. Anyway, I could miss the turn or get lost because I have never been to the island before. So, taking the taxi to Sapphire beach might be a better choice for the tight schedule (the last car ferry leave at 7:15pm)
- Could I find any point -to-point driving time guideline (or summary) anywhere?

Havensight is better, since it's on the way to the ferry dock. It might take longer to go to Sapphire. Also, check with the rental car agency if they allow you to drive the car on St. John.

Oh I forgot, it is very easy to go drive from Havensight to the Red Hook ferry, so I would not worry about getting lost. Just take a taxi from the waterfront to Havensight after you get off the St. Croix ferry. However, the St. Croix - St. Thomas ferry isn't very well-known for on-time performance, I believe. But when I went on it a couple weeks ago, and it went fine and on time.

Driving time is approx. 20 minutes. However, Boyson 340-776-6294 stops from Red Hook at 6:30 p.m., and Reublic 340-779-4000 has the last one over at 7 p.m. Not sure what the times are for Global Marine 340-779-1739.

I also recomend getting the car in Havensight, which will only be a $3 taxi, plus 1 per bag, but I think they close at 5 or 6. Might wanna call them to confirm. Also confirm w/ Sapphire's Budget. You might ned to go to the airport to get it at that time.

Thanks Dominic and Marty,

For Car Ferry:
-I saw the schedule (7:15pm for Barge) under "Ferry Schedules" at the top of this page. After I read your reply, I called them, and found out that it's actually "7:00pm". So, the ferry schedule on this website might need to be changed. They also told me that the car need to arrive there about 20 min before departure time.

For Budget:
- The office hours is from 8-5
- They do let us take the take the car to St. John. This is what they have on their website
" WHY HASSLE WITH:LUGGAGE, FERRY’S AND TAXIS ?
Rent at the airport in St. Thomas and drive to St. John using the ferry. The best thing is that you do not have to carry your luggage from taxi to ferry to taxi etc. etc. Just leave it in your rental car !!! It is a holiday after all !!! "

So, I think my plan is not possible after all....

Unles you change your flight times....or, heck, just stay for a day in STT. You can get a room at Bunker Hill hotel for $88/night. Or at Pirate's Cove Marina...
