I've heard it is wise to take taxis at night instead of driving ... I asume that is a safety thing, If I'm renting a car I'd like to use it in the evening aswell. Should this be a concern.
I don't know which island you'll be on, but we drove at night on both St. John and St. Criox with no problem. That said, I would NEVER stop on a deserted road for ANY reason. If it appears someone is injured or in trouble, drive on to a house or business and report to police from there. Better safe than sorry.
Driving in the daylight is not bad after the first 10 minutes and it pays to have a good navigator (everyone else knows where they're going except you). If you are concerned about driving at night just practice driving around in the day time with your eyes closed and you will get the feel for it. Wait a minute, forget that, it is my navigator that keeps her eyes closed when I'm driving. Not the other way around. Seriously, we drive everywhere at any time on St. Thomas and haven't had a problem. Actually I think it is easier at night as you have the headlights for a warning around those corners. The drinkers are a problem like everywhere else. Use common sense when stopping at places as you should already do any other place. At least I haven't heard of anyone in St. Thomas singling out rental cars for car jackings like they do in Florida.
I think like what others said, some people are scared to drive at night because of the roads, driving on the left side, not being familiar with the roads... but if you practice and get used to it during the day you should be fine. If you plan to drink when you go out then I would perhaps suggest a taxi for your safety in terms of driving while drinking on an unfamiliar road - some tourist get in trouble there. Otherwise you will be fine, stick to roads that are well lit and commercial.

When i was on tortola this week, I was glad I was used to driving on the left when I met my first "round about." Man, that was a unique experience.
