Good afternoon...Does anyone know the drinking and driving laws for the USVI's and the open container policy? Thanks in advance.
DUI is 0.08 (I think the decimals are in the right place). There is no open container law.
Do us all a favor and don't drive drunk.
Thanks..I have no intention of drinking and driving...I was more concerned about passengers with open containers.
The police officers will hold your beer while they give you a ticket for not wearing your seat belt!
But, yes, our roads are odd, windy and some times full of rocks. Be very careful drinking and driving. Stay around the speed limit (20 in town and 35 on the "open road".). Keep left.

You can be stumbling drunk and very few cops will care to do their job, much like the West Indians. BUT, whatever you do, DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING!
So true, It's OK to have a beer in your hand while driving but beware of the cell phone.
I repeat, do us all a favor and don't drive drunk

And try not to make disparaging comments about those of us to whom this is home...

My son is in the Police Academy here in Michigan to become a road officer. And when I told him about the cop holding the beer for you I thought he was going to die laughing. Only in the Virgin Islands. That is great...
The VI officer asked the erratic driver she had just pulled over " Sir have you been drinking?" The driver replied " Yes officer, 4 rum and cokes and a 6 pack of Heineken, and a few shots of tequila" -- She asked " Could you please step out of the car for a breathalyzer test ?" - The driver looked at her and said with a straight face " Why? You don't believe me? "

Is this a joke or did it really happen? Just courious....
DO NOT drink and drive. The roads are horrible in the Islands.
I know somebody who lives on STT (no, not Sherri, or Anna) and they told us that if we had any beer in our jeep that we should just offer them the beer and they would let us go. This never happened, so I don't know if it's just a rumor or it is true.
If you're going to drink, instead of driving, just call a cab.
We went to Duffy's one night and we were given a ride by a very nice local. We were at Sapphire Beach, so it was only a short ride away. We partied at Duffy's and another local (a girl) drove us back to Sapphire. That's how nice the locals can be.
funny story. A few of us were in one of those open cabs and there was traffic (kind of like rush hour). While we were inching through traffic we spotted a place to buy a six pack. We asked the driver if we could hop out and grab beers. He said fine. He continued to inch his way through traffic while my boyfriend ran over and grabbed the six pack and ran back. We opened them and drank them while we worked our way to the beach. BTW, the cabbie did not want a beer. He was a very responsible driver.
It's ok to drink and ride, just don't drink and drive. The roads are insane - very conjested, steep hills, windy roads, bad visibility in a lot of sponts. It's a small island with a tough terrain and a lot of people. Sober is challenging enough. I complain about the cost of a cab, but in the end, it's worth it.
