I've caught the dollar cab at Nisky Center to to downtown before, but my question is: can I take it from Nisky all the way to the ferry terminal at Red Hook?
there are two routes. The town route and then the route that goes from K mart in TuTu around to Red Hook and then back to TuTu. Some also go to town from the Tutu route.

Sorry, from niskey you would need to go to town then catch the dollar cab to TuTu.

Not sure they have two routes. As I see it, they do a circuitous route that takes them up the hill to the mall, on to Red Hook, back to the mall, and back to town. They charge $1. Some charge $2 to go up the hill to the 'country'. If some only do town, that's news to me and I will check it out.
Ron, no need for you to check - I've got this one covered 🙂
If you're taking the $1/$2 safari to town (that means you'll be heading east), you can stay on and MOST will eventually go to Red Hook. Those that aren't will usually tell you before boarding that they're not "going country," so those won't be going to Red Hook. The drivers set their own schedules, so if they don't want to go to Red Hook, they're under no obligation to do so. Once you pass Lockhart Shopping Center (where McDonald's/"little KMart" are), most drivers consider that the start of country, so the fare goes up to $2 pass that point (though according to the taxi laws, the boundary is near Price Smart, but why argue?)
On the return, you'll get off on the opposite side of the street across from Nisky Center since the safari will now be going in a westerly direction.
So, you just don't get on if he ain' goin' country! No nee to change if you ask I guess.
No need to change - just wait for the next one (which would probably be the one you'd be getting on anyway if you went to town). They usually run often enough that it's no big deal waiting for the next one.
Thanks everybody for the answers. Sounds like you better be on island time if you want a cheap trip to Red Hook.
When visiting the VI it is always best to be on "island time" what ever you want to do. Better for the blood pressure as well.
