hi all,
i haven't heard anyone really talk about going to tortola, i was wondering if anyone goes there at all and if theres anything to go do there. any good snorkling stops around there? scooby
For a really good forum regarding travel to The British Virgin Islands (Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, etc) go to www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/ . You will find a wealth of information. The BVI are very special and a ton of people go there. Most of the islands are line of sight from the US virgin islands. If you are staying in STT or STJ you can rent an outboard 25foot boat from various venders (I have used NautiNymph) and easily go to the BVI's without a captain since they are line of sight. We did the day sail with Scubadu and realized how easy it was to travel back and forth between the islands. Then the next 2 days rented the outboad boat from Nauti Nymphs and had a blast in the BVI. Always to return to STJ island for a wonderful time.
thanks salty,
we are also going with scubadu. what can you tell me about the boat? we have the boat for the day. we thought we would go to jost, hit foxys and whatever. want to hit a great snorkel spot also. can you recommend one? were they nice people? i talk to him on the phone he seemed really nice. party people?
any info you can give me would be great. i'll also check out the sites. thanks, scooby
We usually do the same - rent power boat on STJ and tool around the BVIs. Our first stop is always customs in Tortola - either Soper's Hole or Road Town (depending on where we rent the boat; Soper's Hole is closer to Cruz Bay, Road Town is closer to Coral Bay). Both places are neat to visit (clear customs first!) with a variety of shops, bars, and restaurants. Marina Cay is also a neat place to stop for lunch. The north shore of Tortola has the beautiful beaches, much like the north shore of STJ.
The boat is a 40 foot Catamaran, built by Norseman. 4 beds and 2 heads. I believe that Joe lives in one of the bedrooms. He is very friendly and well travelled in the area. Plenty of booze on the boat, if needed. I just went on the boat with one other so it was a big boat for the two of us. Easily could of held 10 more people. You will never go below into the cabins other than to look at them. You will spend all your time up on deck. I would recomend just going to Jost for the day. There will not be enough time to go to Jost and Tortola. Joe will know all the great spots for snorkling. On the back side of Jost, near Foxy's Taboo restaurant is a very small island that is deserted and fun to snorkle at. I think that it is called Sandy Cay, Sandy Spit or something. Joe will know. I get the impression that Joe is a party type person so I think that you will have fun, I know you will have fun. He has been down there for years and will have lots of stories to tell. He can keep a converstion going and is very easy to talk to. The girl that is on his web site is no longer with him. He had some other young thing working with him who was very nice. Both of them are American. Let me know if you have any other questions.
thanks salty, we can't wait! scooby
WE DO!! And, we love it. The Jolly Roger is the best. Can't wait till March for our second trip!
Could you elaborate on Jolly Roger please? What is it?
The Jolly Roger is an EXCELLENT restaurant on the water in Soper's Hole Tortola.
