I was on STJ about 10 years ago. We were driving around the island and came to a beach which I believe had black sand and a bunch a big jagged rocks. We turned a corner while walking and were stunned by how windy and rugged the surf was. The water was also a very beautiful dark blue. This beach was a huge contrast to all the other beaches we had seen which were placid and had lighter colored water.
We are returning to STJ in a few days with our kids and would like to find this beach again. I realize my recollection is hazy and am hoping someone recognizes where this might be. I thought it was called DRUNK BAY but my wife says no. Any help is appreciated. maybe I imagined this or the weather was just an anomaly for that place and day.
There are no black sand beaches on STJ. You will find large rocks on many of the beaches such as Cinnamon, Hawksnest and Jumbie. Hope you find this special place that you remember after all this time.
You are describing some of the beaches on Hawaii. Have you ever visited Hawaii? Maybe you are getting your beaches mixed up. The water in our 50th state is beautiful dark blue.
Good luck in finding your beach.....
The description you've given does sound like Drunk Bay. The sand isn't black, but the beach may have appeared darker than the other beaches because it is covered by rocks. Do you remember how far you had to walk to reach this beach? Drunk Bay would have required a short hike via Salt Pond Bay, past a small salt pond, across to Drunk Bay. Does any of this sound familiar?
Agree with ccasebolt
Your description is closest to Drunk Bay, located between Nanny Point and Ram Hill with access via East side of Salt Pond. The sand is not black but the shore is rockier than most so it might appear dark. The water level drops off more quickly so the color will also appear darker blue. Not sure about the rough water though unless it was winder than normal. That bay is more exposed to the easterly winds so it would appear rougher than Salt Pond but not as rough as the East side of STJ.
Have fun hunting!
Hello Mike,
I also thought Drunk Bay when reading your description, but as mentioned you would have had to hike there after crossing Salt Pond Bay. You would have walked passed a salt pond. Also visitors use drift wood, coral and rocks from the beach to make figures, like dogs & stick people, along the rocks on the left side and on the beach. Do you remember seeing that?

Thanks to all who answered. Just to let you know it was Drunk Bay by Salt Pond. It was a short hike and once I got close it all came back to me. Salt Pond was beautiful as well in its own quiet way.
