I'm staying in a villa in St. John nearby to the Westin Resort. Will I need to rent a car for the week or would doing it by day as needed suffice? Are there things in walking distance, for example: grocery stores, beaches, etc...
How about in Virgin Gorda, our villa is right near the Bathes.
Yes...When you are on St John you will need to rent a car to take full advantage of the island. There is nothing within walking distance (hiking maybe) of the Westin. The best beaches and all of the shopping are farther away.
When you are on Virgin Gorda near the baths you may be able to do without a car. Their is regular jitney (taxi) traffic between there and the Valley and some to the far end.
A car would be helpful to explore further but can be rented on a daily basis. The best of Virgin Gorda is discovered by boat, not car.
Hello Shelly,
If you think that the first day you won't need a car and maybe the second day you want to hang out at the hotel then rent a car on the 3rd through the last day. However most car rentals have deals for 7 day rentals so you might just as well get it for the full vacation. A car will make beach hopping, sightseeing much easier. Figure out what type of activities you will want to do while on St. John and then figure out how many of those require a car or taxi - maybe this method will help you decide.
Have a great time.
