I am going to be in the VI July 8 through 13 and I am really considering renting a car at St. Thomas and driving to Red Hook, but I wanted to know how long would that take in miles and minutes. Because it sounds like it would be better for me to rent a car drive to Red Hook, buy groceries and go across the car barge bcuz it is round trip pricing.
Please advise.
Dawn
Dawn - It is about a 30-35 minute trip from the airport to Red Hook. I'm not exactly sure of the mileage, but it is about a $11 cab fare without tip. Remember, it is left-hand side of the road driving in St. Thomas as well.
It's up to you but on vacation, I would rather defer to others for the degree of concentration needed to drive on the left as well as for direction. More than worth the $11 fare!
You have several things to consider, none are impossible to deal with but as CBinSTL mentioned, you will be the one dealing with them.
Getting used to driving on LH side.
Doing it with more traffic on STT than STJ.
Finding your way to Red Hook.
Getting the groceries.
Meeting the ferry schedule.
Doing it all in reverse on the way back to the airport.
Driving on the left is not difficult, but when you are doing it for the first time, trying to follow directions and keeping with the flow of traffic, it gets interesting.
It is your money and vacation, but I prefer to relax when I go and the above sounds nothing like relaxing to me.
Don't even bother with a car from STT to red hook pay the $15 and get a taxi. Then once on St. John rent a Suzuki jeep there. Been many times this most efficient and least expensive.
