We took a TanTan tour that included a trip to the tide pools, which are worth seeing, but there is no way I would take a vehicle down there 4 wheel drive or not. The road was very, very rough and quite steep.

I have to agree with arnoldod - there is NO way I would take a vehicle of any kind down there, especially if I did not know the way. Nothing is marked, the incline is about 45 degrees, everything is overgrown with brush and Tan Tan. You need to KNOW the way in, nobody can describe it to you and it is quite dangerous to attempt it on your own.

Take the tour (it's fantastic!!!) http://www.stxtantantours.com/, or hike in from Carambola (a relatively easy hike TO the pools, I'm told). BUT, keep in mind though that once you are at the pools there is still a steep (80 degree?) hike up and over rocks and rock faces. The guys from Tan Tan Tours are very experienced and assist the folks on the tour - unless you are an experienced hiker/climber it's still a stretch to do this on your own. Relax and enjoy this with the tour is my strong recommendation.
