OK...another question. We were thinking about renting a dinghy for 4 hours to see lots of beaches. So the question is...is it worth it to rent one to explore around the seashore. Can we make it all the way around the island in 4 hours, or would it take the whole day? And furthermore, if we could NOT make it all the way around, and let's assume we start in Cruz Bay, should we go around to the north side or stay to the south?

Well, you MIGHT be able to SEE the beaches by going around St. John in 4 hours, but you wouldn't be able to stop at any for very long. In addition, I would think you might run out of fuel trying to make it around the entire island on a dinghy.

Now, if you wanted to rent a power boat, say from Nauti Nymph or Ocean Runner, then yes, you'd be able to make it around the entire island and have time to stop at a number of beaches.

In the event you still want to stick with a dinghy from say, Noah's Arks, I'd take a right out of Cruz Bay and head towards the north beaches. Time yourself so that you know how far you've made it in 2 hours so that you can return in another 2 hours. Although returning will be a bit easier since you'll be travelling with the current.

I believe that they only let you go as far as Leinster Bay on the north side...

Hello Paul,

What stops you when you get to a red light?

The dinghy rental in Cruz Bay doesn't want customers taking their rental dinghys passed leinster bay/waterlemon area; perhaps they know the area and how much gas you need and for your safety made this decision. You can rent a dinghy in Coral Bay if you want to do that end of the island.
