My husband and I are thinking of heading to St. John this fall. We are in our early 30s, no kids, and are not into the party scene so we don't need to stay in the middle of all of the action. We have narrowed it down to two cottages...one in Dever's Bay (available in November) and one in Coral Bay (available late September/early October). I know that we may be in the middle of hurricane season but we're willing to buy trip insurance and take our chances. I've read that many businesses shut down during September/October. Knowing that Coral Bay is a small "town" to start with, I wondered it would feel like a ghost town if we stayed there in September. We enjoy eating good food (doesn't have to be fancy) but we are both vegetarians & don't eat seafood. That is one reason we thought that Dever's Bay might be a better option...closer to Cruz Bay where there is a larger selection of restaurants. Am I on track or will it really matter? Finally, we enjoy snorkeling and I was wondering about the proximity of each location to the beaches. It's hard to know from a map how long it would really take us to get to Trunk Bay, for instance, from either location.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

September/October you'll see a good number of closings. Ruth at St. John Spice keeps a list at http://stjohnspice.com/stjohnrestaurants.htm

We love this time of year and will be on island the first week of November. Halloween is a great celebration. We stayed in Coral Bay in March and will be staying above Great Cruz Bay in November. The sunsets from West side of things are great. We stayed on Devers Bay twice and its quite private and a good snorkel of the right and left sides of the bay. There's a good sunset from Devers Bay this time of year.

Cheers, Rick
