Okay, so 10 days ago I finally booked my February airfare to STT. It was hovering at around $800 most of the summer and finally dropped to under $700 so I pulled the trigger (I used one Frequent Flier ticket so I needed the other on Delta). Low and behold, the rate dropped again to around $585 a couple days ago.
So - I emailed Delta and requested a credit voucher for the difference (I'm a gold medallion and generally fly only Delta). Their response was so typical of an out-of-touch-with-their-customer company.
(direct from the delta email to me)
Thank you for your e-mail to Delta Air Lines.
As requested, I have downgraded your air fare and reissued your ticket.
Since there is a $100.00 reissue fee, you now have a credit for $12.20.
Thank you for giving Delta the opportunity to serve your travel needs.
They charged me $100 to issue me a $112 credit when they dropped their own rates!
Funny (or not) that they called it a reissue when you did not change your itinerary! Usually, a reissue is when yo uchange your itinerary - like, when you call to get a cheaper fare, but you have to travel a day before or a day after your original travel plan to get the best fare. In your case, I assume the cheaper fare was on the SAME itinerary.
As far as I know, USAIR is still doing it the "friendly" way - not charging a reissue fee if the itinerary is the same - and giving credit cvouchers for the difference. Not sure how American is doing it - or any of the others.
Unfortunately, the airlines have caught on to the same program used by commercial banks over the past 5 years. They are basically referring to any re-handling of an existing purchased ticket as a reissue. I don't like it but then I don't like being charged to talk to a bank teller or moving my money around in their bank either.
