I'm always thrilled as the ferry approaches Cruz Bay. But then as it gets closer, I can more clearly see the latest results of "development". They keep getting bigger and more offensive. Sirenusa is the most hideous defacement so far. It's taking it to a new level.

Weary -
Any idea how this all turned out yesterday? Did they vote on it yet? Thanks for the updates.
There's another big one in the works - "Pond Bay Club" - a Chocolate Hole project. Looks like they're ready to start.

I don't live on STJ, so I'm not personally familiar with the project of which you speak, but, since you can see it, whether by ferry or from your home, I assume you live here, Weary. So, living here, I also assume that you live in some sort of accomodation? That was built by humans? Isn't that what Sirenusa is going to be? A place for people to live? Just like where YOU live? Why is it OK for the place where YOU live to have been built, but not OK for a place to be built for others to live? I'm not being sarcastic here, I'm being serious. Isn't your home built with concrete? Granted, the size may be somewhat different, but a place to live is the same, whether it's a single family abode, or an apartment complex. Look at Bellevue. Why weren't people complaining about that? It's MUCH larger in size, covers MANY more acres, and has a MUCH larger impact on the enviroment. On STT, look at Lovenlund...same thing. People need to be housed, folks. The population is growing, it has been forever, and will continue to do so....it doesn't matter whether you came by canoe (the 'real' Indians), were 'bahn heah', or are a transplant, you still need a home....Anyone complaining that there are too many people here is being a bit of a hypocrite, as they, themselves, are part of the problem they complain about. This is just MY opinion, mind you.
Are these residential projects or resorts? Are they timeshare condos? I read that Pond Bay Clun is being called a "resort"...so that makes me think it is not a place for people to live - it is a place for vacationers. When it comes to building resorts in a plce like STJ, I think there may be a concern that overdevelopment will detract from the beauty and draw - and then you see that the place isn't such a big attraction anymore - and then the toursim numbers begin to dwindle - but you have all of these resorts. There are islands that have taken great pains to preserve their natural beauty. Look at places like Mustique.....or Bermuda, where you travel by golf cart or moped. One of the big concerns on STJ is parking.
Then again, maybe people will keep coming. Or, maybe different people will come - people who don't mind all of the concrete being around.
I dunno about Pond Bay, but Sirenusa is going to be for private housing. Bellevue and Lovenlund are for low-income housing.
I believe these are called "condos" not "apartments". Which means you could buy a bunch and have us good tourist rent them.
