Hi Everyone,

Going to be in STJ the first week of August, first timer for staying on the island, have been many times just for the day passing thru from being on a cruise ship.
Anyway what is the best way to see the BVI for a day trip by ferry or a day charter.
Love to snorkel.

There are alot of day sail companies that will take to you to Jost van dyke and Tortola, both of which are beautiful and are well worth seeing and are not to terribly far from st. john. I also recommend going to Virgin Gorda, but this is further away and I have been told that alot of day sails won't go there because of the distance but Limnos out of st. thomas does. This is more of a ferry type boat. It's a large engine powered boat and once you get to the island you go on a bus to discover the caves and sights of the island. You then get back on the boat and head to Norman Island where you do some great snorkeling. I am a person that likes to see things and kind of like to be on my own but the day sails that I described above were a great way to see the islands, get some sun and some beach time. So in my opinion day sails are the way to go.

You might also check out Captain Nautica (www.captainnautica.com) for an excellent power boat excursion to Jost, replete with plenty of snorkelling at different locations. Enjoy!

Take a powerboat. You will be able to see more. We used Lion in Da Sun. We went all over the BVI's. It was nice getting to decide where we wanted to go and how long we want to stay in one place. We weren't rushed. Price was good and all 6 of us thought this was the best day of our vacation.

Both times I've been to STJ for a vacation, we went to see Jost via a catamaran day sail. We thoroughly enjoyed this b/c we liked the relaxing-sail part of the trip as much as going to Jost itself. So if you like to sail through briliant blue waters and just kick back, go on a catamaran. You still have hours at Jost and we never felt rushed.

We've taken the Scubadu and No Shooz and would recommend both. Scubadu provides lunch and No Shooz lets you buy at either Soggy Dollar or Foxy's.

Whether catamaran or powerboat, I'd say to do a day sail as opposed to ferrying over. The experience of getting there is half the fun!
