For the smaller daysails, is it customary to tip the captain? I would certainly tip the first mate, or other staff but am not sure about the owner as he is already getting $120 per person.
Marie:
We went on a day sail in April...the price was $110.00 ($105.00 for cash). We tipped 15%. The tip was for the "crew", which included the captain. Note, the captain did not own the ship....he only worked for the owners.

Hello,
I think because its a service industry 10-20% is the norm... some captains work alone and own the vessel while some work for someone else that owns the boat. Some work with a crew. Some captains split the tip with their mates and others give all the tip to the mates and take none. So you can decide how much to tip based on your experience.

I would say most captains do not own the boats. The ones that do, normaly give all the tips to the crew.
While most service workers appreciate any gratutity,Islander is right, 15% if you thought the service was good and up to 20% if it was excellant, usually about $15 or $20 per person. I have never been on any trip I didnt think that the service was excellant. They really have that spoil you while your on vacation thing down!
