Hello all!

We're headed to STT February 4-11 and are definitely going over to STJ for a day trip. We have a rental car for STT (not 4WD), but I'm not sure what to do while on STJ for the day? Should we take the car ferry over, rent a jeep on STJ or use taxis for the day?

If we use taxis, do you feel that we will get to see as much as we would with our own vehicle?? How reliable is the car ferry?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! 17 days and counting!

Hello Taghan,

If you have a rental car on St. Thomas then confirm with the agency whether they permit their cars to go over to St. John. If they do then take it over on the car ferry. The car ferries are pretty reliable, get to the dock at least 30 minutes prior to departure time, drivers typically get their cars in line close to the dock, allowing enough room for cars getting off the incoming barges to do so, there isn't anyone there to buy tickets from, you just have to wait and then when the barge comes the guys on the barge direct drivers/cars on and collect the fee on board. Confirm the return barge times when buying tickets.

If you can't take your rental over then try and rent one on St. John. Most won't take reservations for one day, however there are several in Cruz Bay so you can walk from one to the next or sometimes their are rental car employees dock side asking if anyone needs a rental car.

You will see much more with a rental car, unless of course you are willing to pay a taxi to spend the day with you and drive you everywhere.

Thanks Islander!

We're renting from Budget and they do allow their cars on the ferry. My only concern with bringing it on the car ferry is that the schedule shows the last one goes back at 7 p.m. and we're probaby going to want to stay later than that (I think!).

I think I'm going to try to find a one-day rental on St. John so that we see more and not have to worry about the 7 p.m. departure time.

Thanks for the info!!!!
