I need suggestions for a day charter to Jost Van Dyke. I realize this is short notice so any suggestions would be appreciated. I have contacted a few people and they are already booked. Any ideas? There will be 4 adults and we would like to charter a private boat and captain.

CJ, try Calypso at calypsovi.com. Ask for Sherri. Good people.

Thanks -- we rented a dinghy from Shery last year. I did not realize they had large boats!

I just got an email from Lion In Da Sun Charters tonight. We are trying to book a snorkel day trip for the same times as you guys. He said that he has the 7, 8 & 9th available to book. It's a bit pricey for us to do the charter alone, and he told me to post on here to find out if someone would want to book with us. He only takes 6 out on the boat, and there are 2 of us.

In his email he said the cost is $475/day charter + fuel (approx 4.56/gal - approx 20-40 gallons) and $20 for BVI customs. Charter goes from 8:30 - 4:30/5, has a cooler with water and I think he said juice, but we can bring our own, and they will go wherever we want. Their web site is www.lionindasun.com.

I've been to most of the touristy snorkel areas around the islands, and want to hit something off the beaten path this time, and we only want to snorkel, and then snorkel, and then maybe do some more snorkeling - with maybe a quick little lunch stop.

It's just us 2 girls, we have our own equipment and are pretty advanced snorkelers looking for advanced places to go to - if you are beginners please advise. My daughter is 11, but is very travel and adult conversation savvy. She just backpacked with me in Fiji - island hopping for 18 days, and we chartered a bunch on Grand Cayman this year too, everyone loved her along. We are a couple of fun, easy going non-opinionated people, and won't ever get in your way!

If you think you guys might be interested in sharing, we will be on St. John the 5-12th of July, just let me know a little about your group and maybe we'll get a great day trip going. If not - maybe you guys can book it yourselves - either way , I hope this helps you have some fun!

Thank you so much for your reply. We are not that advanced -- in fact one of our group has never snorkeled. I am afraid we would just be in your way. We do want to snorkel, but also want to barhop on Jost. I will let you know if our plans change and we just want to snorkel the entire day. I hope you have a lot of fun. Thanks again.

Try Born to Rhumb (borntorhumb.com). I am not sure if Captain Kevin is still on island, but it's worth dropping him an email. His boat is great, he is a fabulous guy and we go out for a day with him every April - it's always our best day!!

No problem. You can still call Lion in da sun - they seem quite nice and at least they have something available. I'll keep trying to find someone to share a trip. All the places are beautiful and pretty easy to snorkel, so it probably doesn't matter if someone is a beginner along - keep us in mind if you decide you want to try and share.

You might want to hit Willy T's for a great bar and fish sandwich - it's right on the water (barge that's tied up in the middle of a secluded bay). Your guide will know where it is. You used to be able to get a pirate tattoo (temporary) if you jump off the top of the barge naked - but that usually goes on at night. I didn't do it because I was there during the day, and there was an extremely large barracuda hanging out eating pieces of fish sandwich that people were tossing over for it. ha!

A very fun place to snorkel - and I think it was OK for beginners, was The Cave's.... Other place is Honeymoon or Indians - again your guide will know where and there's lots to see.

Enjoy your trip - maybe we'll see you round. - Jana

We used Lion in Da Sun. The trip was wonderful! Capt. Josh took us where we wanted to go. He also took us to a couple of great snorkeling places that we didn't know about. Everyone in our group thought that was the best day of our trip. If we would have had more time we would have done 2 boat trips.
