I have a question for all of you seasoned travelers. We had one of our passports go through the wash (don't ask - long story) and it came out wrinkled up, but still easily readible. I put it under a stack of books to flatten it out, but wonder if it will make it through customs without raising a lot of questions. Has anyone had a similar experience with their passport or are we the only careless idiots? We are coming to St John in November and I just wonder if we need to try to get another one before then. We will also be traveling to the BVI at that time and just prefer a passport vs. a birth certificate.

I would think if it's legible and your picture hasn't been affected you'd be fine. Can you still read the stamps that were in there from previous trips too? Don't know who you'd find out from. You could try your local airport and see what the TSA could tell you. You wouldn't want to get to the airport the morning of your flight and have there be an issue that's for sure.

I'm sure yours is not the first passport to end up in the wash.

Diana -

Yes, everything can still be read. We have contacted the State Department and are waiting for a reply. Basically, the glue from the front & back cover holding those pages on is gone, but everything else is intact. I would think people who travel a lot would have a very used looking passport, which is what this now looks like. I was just hoping this has happened to someone else and they could offer a little insight as to what to do. Thanks for the reply.

Hello Carolmo,

You'll likely be ok but give the Immigration/Customs folks at the St. Thomas airport a call at (340)774-4279 and see what they say.

Have you heard back from the State Dept?
