Hello to All!
My question is we plan on using the ferry and visiting the BVI. I know the ferry cost but I have read on some of the posts that the Custom fee is aprox. $20. My question is, is this per person or per group (family)? Also do you know if the ferry's take travel checks or just cash? ohhhhh one last question, Is Norman Bay worth seeing? I know I want to see the Baths but I have read alot about the Caves and Indians (not sure what that is)... any information would be great.
Thanks !!!!

Customs Fee is $20.00 per person. I don't know about the cash vs. travelers checks - good question.

Barbara, cash is king and is only currency or pmt. acceptable in the bvi to my knowledge, credit or atm cards are a definite no no. In reference to your other question on whether its worth it or not... Thats a big YES!! it will be the highlight of your vacation.

We decided to take the ferry to Tortola a couple of years ago and were surprised that there was no fee or maybe it was collected along with the cost of ferry ticket.

Surprised since we always end up paying $20.00 when we do a daysail.

Must be a difference for some reason. I would think that since so many BVI'ers take the ferry to STT to shop that the fee is differently structured.

I thought I read somwhere that when you take the ferry, customs was only $5 PP, but on a charter its $20, and I wondered then why the difference. We are also taking the ferry to Jost for a day.

We traveled this past February and the only fees we incurred were the actual ferry costs. Perhaps they built the other fee in and therefore we never knew what it cost. CASH.........in all our traveling we find that the only thing accepted on the ferry is cash.....keep in mind when traveling to some of the more remote BVI's there aren't any ATM's (i.e. Jost). So carry plenty of cash for the ferry. It seemed all restaurants and shops took credit cards but the ferry you definately need cash. Just a word of caution when taking the ferry....depending on where you are traveling to and from be careful when purchasing "round trip". We purchased round trip, stayed on island in the BVI's and then tried to return with our "round trip" ticket and they said they were no good because it was a different ferry filling in for another. We ended up having to pay $100.00 for round trip which was really one way and then another chunk of cash to get back........glad we had the extra cash.......! Jill

You must have an in because when we inquired about using one she told us no, cash only. Same thing in STT at the Red Hook, no credit cash only.

We've always paid $20 pp on charters to the BVI's. Not sure how it works on the ferry.

The Indians is a wonderful snorkel...even in rough seas. Quite magical. I wanted to hit the Caves too but didn't get there. Word on the street is that if you had to choose, choose the Indians.

I think we did use a credit card for ferry service between St. Thomas and Cruz Bay.......the following site answers a few questions:

http://www.bestofbvi.com/info/info_bviferry.htm

Specifically:

Do the ferry companies accept credit card?

Yes, credit cards are accepted except for the ferry between Tortola-Jost van Dyke (New Horizon Ferry Service) which accepts cash only.
