Is Botany Bay currently accessible? I've read a lot on the board about the development and problems with access from about a year ago, but I was wondering what the current situation is. It looks like an absolutely gorgeous spot and I was hoping to drive out that way during our upcoming visit. Thanks.
Public Access to the Botany Bay development is mandated by their CZM and DPNR and Zoning permits -- they somehow satisfy this by providing a gated entrance with an guard who will sign in your car with proper ID -direct you to a parking space - if one is available, -- at the top of the property just inside the gate - and then you must walk -- a long way down to the beach, carrying whatever you have AND a really hot, 100% UPHILL walk back to your car. I have done it and absolutely do not recommend it at all unless you are very fit and carry water. There is no transportation available - at least that was the case every time I visited - and if the limited parking space is occupied there is no entrance at all by car. You are not allowed to drive down anywhere and drop anyone off or pick anyone up - only driving allowed is from the gate to the parking space -- about 15 seconds away. This is Public Access to the 388 Acres in their definition and seemingly accepted by the permit givers.
If you really want to see the property call a real estate agent and get the tour - otherwise it is a walking shame.
The Corning Family that sold this estate would be disgusted with the owners and Govt. overseers IMO.
Zero, thank you for the information and for the quick reply. It's incredible how much I've learned from the "regulars" on this board while lurking the last few weeks.
Too bad about Botany Bay. I think I'll cross it off my list. Luckily, there's no shortage of other amazing spots on St. Thomas and St. John for us to visit.
Botany is really beautiful - if you can stand the patter, the real estate tour idea is not a bad way to see it and spend some time --or spend a few million in loose change.
